Posted this a while back but got no replies getmecoat Not terribly exciting I'm afraid, but would really appreciate any feedback.

A bit more concisely, on the Escort I run (pushrod engined one) I consistently get 6-7mpg better on BP petrol (normal stuff, 95RON) compared to the local Total garage which is cheapest. Had to do a couple of tankfuls on BP by coincidence and noticed the difference, so tried it out properly (a few tankfuls of one, followed by the other. Repeat. As I said, not very exciting, but thorough at least hehe)

To me, this seems too much and too consistent to be ruled out as coincidence. Has anybody else experienced this? And if so, do any other companies use the same petrol as BP? As the local one's pretty high on the pump - about 6p a litre more than Total.

It is worth mentioning that it makes literally zero difference on my Astra, only on the Escort.

Cheers smile

There's a Texaco just changed to BP near me. No real difference. I sometimes use Shell but i really cant be arsed to look at the mpg anymore. I know i get 26/27 at best, anything more is a bonus.

When I was in the uk my bikes were looked after by a race team mechanic.

He hated cheap petrol and blamed all sorts of malady upon it.

To compare he poured some BP petrol out of the tank of my bike onto his workshop drive and some petrol from another guys bike he knew filled up with cheaper supermarket fuel.

The BP fuel evaporated twice as fast as the other stuff.

Since then I have only used (as much as possible) BP or shell.

If I have to use cheaper fuel in the Saab I never get over 400 miles from a tank. Aral/BP or shell is closer to 450.

And yes, it is interesting. wink

I find the same. Never ever use supermarket petrol unless I really have to. And then I will only put in a fiver to get me to the nearest branded (pref Shell) station.

Always found that regardless which car I've put it in, Shell, BP, Esso etc. do far more miles than supermarket fuels.

anorak mode/ I found that BP 95 as a minimum makes the Tuscan a smooth ride, the engine appears to be silkier if that makes sense. Alternatively I use shell. Have made a concious decision to stay away from Supermarket fuel.

I've informally observed that BP petrol from Sainsbury's petrol station gives me better mpg than BP petrol from the BP station. So there you go. Possibly.

To mix things up a bit, I seem to get slightly better than normal economy out of Morrisons fuel. My last tank was 38mpg, and I usually average 36. Not a great difference but I will fill up with it the next few times and see if it is consistantly higher. It has been higher in the past too. This is comapared to Shell/Esso/Total - there isn't a BP that I pass on my jounreys.

Incidently, I did a spat of shell VPower, four tanks in a row, and my average fuel economy dropped by a couple of MPG.

Perhaps that is due to something like using the heater less

Slightly different route or volume of traffic meaning less stop and atart's.

The increase from Morrisons? Possible, but I tend to do the same jounrey's at the same time every week. I infact noticed I was pretty heavy footed on my last tank so was more surprised that mpg was better. I'm going to do a few more tank fulls and see what I notice.

As i'm a recent convert back to petrol i've been trying to find what my car (Mazda 3 Sport) uses best. My local Sainsburys 95 RON is ok, Tesco 95 seems terrible (got that in the tank at the moment), Shell 95 FuelSave seems terrible too.

I'm thinking of trying a 97 RON to see if that makes any difference at some point. I will try the normal BP tomorrow though as I'm heading past a BP garage in the morning. smile

Hi Folks

I think this is an interesting topic too!

I have had experience of this kind of thing re BP as well - however, it was the other way around for me.

I used to have an E36 328i auto that ran ok on Tesco juice when that was the only thing available to me - also I didn't bother with their higher octane stuff as it didn't seem to make a difference with that motor. Ideally I would use Shell Optimax / V-Power and that always seemed to be the best for both responsiveness / power and economy, but normal shell would be ok too, just not quite so good. Out of interest I tried BP (Ultimate?) higher octane stuff one day and the old girl just drank it in a real hurry, didn't notice any particular probs with running less smooth or anything - the stuff just seemed to disappear!!!

Anyone else had this with a BMW or similar?

Is it a petrol?

Get two jerry cans.
Run car to empty.
Fill up with Morrisons jerry can, count miles.
Fill up with another jerry can, count miles.

Too much hassle. I usually use Tesco Pumps purely due to the fact they have pay at pump it convenient.

Filled up with Tesco 99 instead of the usual V-Power and I can immediately see the mpg falling. Not good.
