Ibiza Cupra 2.0 16v - mate is looking at buying, advice.
Discussion
Close mate of mine looking at getting a new car, he's seen a 2.0 16 Ibiza cupra/gti on a T plate asking price £1500 at 78k miles.
I don't know much about these, never driven one, as far as I know they supposed to be pretty quick, isn't it the mk3 golf gti 16v engine, On basically a polo chassis? Anyone got one?

Yes, it's the mk3 Golf ABF 2.0 16v engine, 150bhp.
There was an 8v engine too, which I used to have. Plenty of 8v cars are advertised as 16v due to higher values, or vendors not knowing the difference. The 16v should have a silver inlet manifold that goes from the top of the engine over the rocker cover into the front of the cylinder head. Also a half leather interior (on the seat bolsters) is an easy way to differentiate - cloth in the 8v generally.
Aside from the usual things to watch for with a used car....
1) Creaking clutch pedal. The pedal box is pretty much guaranteed to break at some point, a creak as you push it down is a giveaway. A garage will need between 3 hours and half a day to remove the box and replace it. It can often be welded back together. If a new one goes in, it's worth seam welding around the small bracket which is spot welded to the main pedal box.
2) Rust on the rear wheel arches, and on the top of the sills in the door opening.
3) Rear bushes on the front wishbone tend to wear out, as do top mounts on the front shocks.
Oh, and the GTi has separate bulb sections in the headlight for main and dipped beams. Dipped on the outside, main on the inner secition. Cars that have had a front end bump often end up with non-gti headlights which are a simpler design. Perhaps they are easier / cheaper to get hold of.
Think that about covers it.
