The wife is looking for a new cheap runabout. She currently drives a MG TF but she needs more room as we plan on having a mini dunclane next year.

Now I've offered my suggestions the usual Golf, Focus etc but she likes the look of the Alfa 147 and the Fiat Stilo. I've said unreliable but am I right?

If you know any different please let me know.

I had a (04 Reg) Stilo from brand new for 18 months and it never broke.

Looked quite nice too! Comfortable, good cruiser, felt solid. I really liked it actually! smile

Early Stilos have lots of electrical problems. The later cars are apparently better.

Diesels are good.

147 Selespeeds are worrying.

Ask her if she likes the look of the SEAT Ibiza. A much better reliabilty bet i'd imagine, if that sort of thing concerns you.

That Stilo I talked about, it didn't miss a beat.

I had a Mk4 Golf some years later, its broke and cost me &&&.

I'd think twice about getting VAG again!

Don't expect a Stilo to be as reliable as the MG.

I suggested the Polo, Ibiza and the Fabia maybe a little on the small side though. She doesn't like the previous gen Leon that's for sure.

I had a diesel stilo from new in 2002 for 3 years. Dreadful car. Looked good but lots of electrical problem. The sunroof stuck open the day before the weather froze.
I had the car lose all PAS, ABS round an island.
It took Fiat 9 months to replace faulty headlamp on warranty.
For a JTD engine it was very noisy, slow, and a very very heavy clutch.

It is a censored of a job to replace headlight bulbs.

Although the car didn't let me down, I had zero confidence in it and would NOT recommend one.

From memory, i think one model is a really high road tax bracket.

My dad runs a Fabia estate 1.9tdi. Very reliable engine wise, although some parts of the build quality leave a lot to be desired. Examples being the seat mechanism, and more worryingly the front suspension bushes. Overall would recommend though.

The one I knew of ate HT coil packs, various other electrical gremlins and broke down reasonably frequently. They are good value to buy but I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole, the type of car that did it's bit in it's day to earn Fiat it's reputation for unreliability.

My dad had a 53 reg Stilo for a few years and had lots of problems with it, every time I got into it something else seemed to be falling off or failing.

I've had a 53 reg 147 for two years and touch wood, have not had any problems with it. You do have to keep on top of servicing etc more than other cars though and like someone else mentioned, the Selespeeds are known to be problematic. I love it though. biggrin

Had one when they came out. First and only new car. Owned for 2 years before convincing fiat to take it back. Among other problems were 3 gearboxes, 6 coilpacks, complete emissions system, 2 horns, 2 airbags, 2 door catches, a suspension strut, a wishbone, and that is what I can remember. Worst

Don't be tempted by the low prices of the Selespeed cars, especially the earlier ones. They are an absolute nightmare. Get a manual, I can't stress that enough.

ETA: I wouldn't get one at all, but if you're going to, get a manual.
