Dear All,

If you car was worth circa £50k, would you:

1) Park it on the street and not worry about it.

2) Pay Circa £100-150 per month for an underground parking space.

Half of me thinks that £1200 - £1800 to keep your car 'safe from damage' per annum is quite a lot and I should just bank the money and use it towards any parking scuffs that might occur.

What do the PH collective think?

100% park it safely!

Depending on where you are in London, what difference will it make to your insurance? Offset that against costs and I would say it is a no brainer.

Without any hesitation whatsoever. At all!

What difference does it make to your insurance? For my car the cheapest option is on the road, and garaged is the most expensive. I reckon bank it and treat the scuffs when they occur, but you need a spreadsheet and some quotes wink

Off street. Otherwise a group of spanish drunken yobbos will walk all over the bonnet and roof, as happened to a Jag owned by a colleague of mine the other day.

Which part of London?

I am guessing at only £100-150 probably one of the rougher areas?

Depends a) what the car is and b) where you live.

I'd leave a £50k Ferrari on the street on Eaton Sq. but not a £50k BMW on the street in Elephant.

Depends where you live I guess.

I live in SW London, and all sorts of expensive metal is left on the roads quite safely and I'm talking DBS/Ferrari level.

Drive a couple of miles in the other direction and it's a different story however.

I see that NCP are doing a residents rate season ticket, where you can park 24/7 in any car park across London at any time for £1000 a year. Don't know if Wetminster or APCOA do anything similar.

Does that apply to Cadogan Place?

Whereabouts in Westminster? We live in Westminster and it is huge! And would love to find some secure parking at that price....

Got a link - I can't see anything on the NCP website. That's an astonishingly good rate for NCP.

OP - I recommend you get insurance quotes for on- and off-street and see how the straight maths works. Then you can factor in how much the anti-idiot defence is worth to you; and not just for drunken Iberians, but for things like delivery vans, rubbish carts, and cyclists, none of whom will leave their insurance detals under your wipers if they take a lump out of your paint.

For me (Gallardo, W1), the insurance savings paid for the parking rental. Having said that I am looking out of my window and can see two Ferraris, couple of Astons and Maseratis, and Range Rovers without number all parked up and not seeming to suffer.

I used to park my car in a car park in Westminster, about £1k a year with a residents discount. I had to do it initially as my insurers wouldn't cover me on the street. When I had the option to park it on the street I decided to do it.

- Car park is a 5+ min walk away, you will use the car less
- Loading with luggage can be a pain - go to car park, fetch car, drive home, load up, watch for traffic wardens etc etc
- Car gets covered in dust and crap in the car park
- You (might) not have a residents permit and it's a pain to always have to put the car back in the car park and not be able to easily park in the local area.

I've (touch wood) not had any issues on the street - I'd save your money.

or google ncp london promotion

Hopefully the link will still work. Its for the forst 1000 customers only and new business only. Works at their premier sites at Grosvenor, Brewer street and Cadogan as well.

A 50k car coudl be something as non descript as a specced up 5 series. Of which there are many, all over the place.

A Gallardo which in todays market is a 50k car is a different story of course.

Apart from the last place, I've never had off street parking & its never (touch wood) been a problem. If I couldn't park securely as close as I can park on the road outside the house, its just to much like hard work.

I have three cars in that price bracket (well the M5 used to be frown ) and only one garage space. The Aston gets that. The BMWs slum it on the street with lots of other nice cars and also lots of older cars. The only trouble I've ever had has been theft of an M3 nine years ago and having my DB9 keyed when I left it on the street (I am pretty sure I know who did it, but I have no evidence apart from the fact that the guy is a miserable, misanthropic ).

If you live in London, unless you are ultra rich, ass opposed to merely super rich, you are unlikely to have off-street parking for more than one car.

But dread the thought of moving two miles up the road to get off street parking for all your cars hehe
