Hi all

i have a friend who wants to go abroad in their car..
how do change the headlights when you have xeons without having to go to a dealer to get them reprogrammed for 60£????

i take it you cannot use the normal light redirecting strip you normally stick on teh glass?

thanks

Modern high-intensity discharge (HID), halogen or xenon headlights
Some feature an internal 'shutter' that can be moved into place by a screw or lever adjustment at the back of the headlamp unit, but some designs are less convenient and the dealer will need to make the adjustment for you.

These lights can be adapted by some headlamp beam converter kits too.

The AA Shop sells beam converters suitable for all vehicles – individual fitting diagrams are included for the latest 'Clear Glass', 'Projector' and 'Xenon' headlamps inside the packaging.

Remember to remove the converters as soon as you return to the UK.

What car is it? as mentioned some can be done at home, some are a PITA. Some don't bother changing it any more due to light pattern.

Don't bother - they don't change their lights when they come here, so why should you bother changing yours?

Some of the Eastern European migrant workers have had their cars here for 4 or 5 years, and they're still driving about with the lights the wrong way.

Good point. Make sure you drive on the left as well - that'll really show 'em.

I rang the garage before I went to Europe a couple of months back as my car has Xenons - they said I didnt need light delfectors.

I also asked the AA man at the chunnel terminal and he said "dont bother with xenons, the light beam is so much flatter than non-xenons, to the point they wont dazzle".

I didnt get flashed once in the time I was overseas.

Very apt forum name I see.
You from the "two wrongs definitely make a right" camp?

Hmmmm, so why do I get blinded when I go round a RH bend at night with a car with Xenons coming the other way on dipped beam?

Further more, why has my Audi got a setting in the MMI to switch the lights over?

My answer relates to what I was told for my car. I asked the main agent and the AA man and have no reason to doubt either of them.

Having also parked the car in front of a wall to check the beam pattern, I was happy. Dazzle from xenons happens home here, even with UK car (especially BMW's for some reason), but while you may be right for your car and your car needs adjusting, I was told not to adjust mine.

The adjustment that was available on my old S3 (which basically meant taking the headlights / bumper off to do) was tiny so I ended up just leaving them on the European setting which was a totally flat beam. Best thing would be to park against a wall or similar and see if the beam goes up to the passenger side of the car.

That's weird...I have repeatedly noticed that too...why do BMW headlights (particularly 5 series) xenon headlights appear to flick up and down? confused

CPU upgrades shouldn't require any new software, but if you want to save money on programs try Linux.
