So I got out of the house this evening and notice that some fool has decided to scrape my car and drive off. One broken rear light and a small scrape.

My first thought was that my decision to buy a winter hack has paid off. If it would have been my P & J I would be in tears. Thank you brain for making that decision. Strangely i'm not angry.

A few yards from the car I see this lying on the floor.

Any guesses what it has come off?

If you Google that number you get:-
mirror caps from the Passat B5

Teile Nr.1 KO 857 538 u. 1 KO 857 537 in schwarz L041. Part No. 1 857 538 KO 1 KO 857 537 in black and L041.

Hope this helps.

Hopefully wait and meet them, and tell them you saw them do it, and have 2 options, sort it out themselves, or pass it on to insurance.

You had the numberplate, and the face spotted the first time.

I'll never see them. I only noticed when i saw bits of plastic lying all over the road, i presumed the worst and then thought 'is that it, phew!' when i 'examined' the damage.

coincidence? a wing mirror must be a good 2-3ft higher than a light cluster and to shatter one rather than knock it back on the mechanism would mean a much fuller impact.

Really? Two to three feet?

Two to three inches maybe, but feet?

Rear light cluster on a vast number of cars I would estimate is about spot on a wing mirror height.

I had a white van do my old company car - the whole side from rear bumper to front, mirror off as well - 3 independent witnesses and the plod wouldn't do anything as the owner of the van denied it was him. Had to claim on own (company's) insurance.

Before anyone makes 2+2=5, they should measure the height of an passat/golf against the impact mark of the Pug. I'd be pretty surprised if they lined up at all...
yep. ok maybe my 2-3ft was way off [late night on the whisky] but there is enough difference to allow doubt. to break the mirror i would expect a much fuller impact and more body damage to both cars.

Five in the pic, to be fair, but the 5th ring did surround the letters V and W hehe

+1

I've got a feeling they use the same design on quite a few models.

I dont think the height matters much, how many people have seen a car on coilovers?
