Wife wants a new car in the next couple of months. No problems with this, but (main) dealers have already told us that despite it having very low mileage, her current runaround is not really attractive to take in PX (for a small car) as it’s

1) High Road Tax (@ £200ish) compared to other models in the range (it’s a 1.8 SRi)
2) High Fuel Consumption (less than 40 round town)

Therefore, we are told it’s unlikely to be attractive to the mainstream buyers that dealers want on their forecourts and only likely to attract “boy racer types.” This might be sales BS to smooth the way for a low PX offer, but the comment seemed fair enough - this was simply something we hadn’t considered when we bought the car new, 3 years ago.....

I know that PX gets you a bad deal, but it appears that based on some early discussions, they simply won’t want the car

So, not wanting to take the (likely) derisory PX value (about 15% down on the average for what we’ve seen on t’internet – based on a quick WBAC text quote), so where is the best place to advertise?

Obviously, first up is PH, but where else?

Autotrader? Costly...

Local Free Papers? Limited people will see...

Ebay? Chancers/Nutters....

Obviously I want to maximise what I can get, without taking the piss. But I am confused about where to possibly start.....

If you’ll understand, I don’t want to state the make/ model, as I don’t want to be seen as advertising stuff for sale on the Forum

Personally, I've had good results with PH but it depends on the car.

Putting a car on Autotrader or eBay, I suspect it needs to be very well priced. Where ever you advertise it, you'll need to weedle out the peckers.

Good luck.

from experience, Ebay classified ad seems to sell more cars at the moment, however Autotrader will get you more phonecalls.

PH is good, but people tend to look for more exotic cars on there. worth a try though.

also do do a check on webuyanycar etc just to see what the base line would be if you get really stuck

They always come out with some line of guff when you mention px - has anyone ever taken a car for px and the dealer has said 'nice car, I'll have no bother shifting that so will give you a decent price'? There's always something wrong with it, if you'd taken a little 1.0L jobbie the tt would've said 'oh we have too many like this, low spec and not desirable, only for old grannies'.

IMO you will have to bite the bullet and pay for autotrader, for a lot of people I know who arent that interested in cars it's the only national advertiser they look at and sometimes the only place they look full stop (not an abundance of choice locally).

Although some may see this as an ad, I'm only speaking as I find.

I've sold so many cars through PH over the years and all have been straightfoward. Most sold to first enquirer too.
