Ok may get flamed down for suggesting people slow down but its something I've been pondering, what would you do to get excessive speeders to slow down?

people don't like speed cameras as they are just cash machines for the govt. and people are busy watching their speed rather than the road.

We hate speed bumps as modern cars just go flying over them whilst anyone with anything remotely interested has to slow down to 2mph.

I personally think the traffic chicanes are st as it just makes people come flying down the road on the wrong side to try and squeeze through before you get there, or don't have a clue how it works which results in many near death experiences and where I use to live there was a crash and some people did die.

so, PH elite, how you would try and slow people down? I only ask as I live on a road which is 30mph, quite often has kids playing on the pavements or drives of the houses and yet chavs/businessmen and even the mums on the way back from the school run fly down this road in excess of 60mph constantly. only moved here recently but it is honestly bonkers!

so what are your suggestions? tyre spikes? chuck fake kids out in the road?

I reckon if the speed limit on motorways was increased to 100mph then we would see a drop in speeding around towns.

I have no viable reasoning for my thoughts though. There's only one way to find out eh?!

I wouldn't; it's not my or your job to do this and it could backfire in a very messy way to your detriment. If you have dheads speeding around a housing estate you need to get as many people as possible to report this to the police.

sorry I'll rephrase it, if you were in charge of road safety, what would you suggest doing?

Im not on about motorways etc which I think should be increased rather decreased, and I dont want everyone driving at 15mph through villages, 30mph even 40 isn't that bad, but when you hear them pulling into the road and flooring it taking it right through the rev range or the extra loud tyre noise of the moderns flying past is just taking the piss really.

Now i would love to moan to the council about it but I can almost guarantee they would stick those horrible 'pillow' type speed bumps in which have gone in most of the street surrounding us and with a TVR these are impossible to go over without hearing a nice scrape!

Those lighting up speed limit signs work quite well on a psychological level to slow people down in urban areas. I've always thought that if you could link a couple together a few hundred yards apart with a number plate reader so it would flash up their number plate and say "still speeding XXXXXX?" that could have quite an impact.

If it's for the safety of the children teach them roads are for cars not people and they are dangerous, so don't play on them!

Like you say, I'd avoid getting the council involved, as the end result will annoy everyone, you included.

What might work, depending on the width of the road, is creating a nice little chicane/slalom so it's impossible to do 60. Would require co-operation from everyone, though.

Good point from the poster above - it's an excellent opportunity for children to figure out that roads are not playgrounds.

I think the things where there is only one lane to pass are about the best things as they don't knacker cars and DO make people think twice about using those roads as shortcuts.

I don't generally speed at all in 30 areas however I don't think there is an easy answer to the idiots other than what previous posters have said about 'education' somehow.

Good idea.

They had one on the M8 years ago. Not sure if the 'name and shame' aspect had the desired effect, but I was always impressed with it.

yes that's true, funnily enough I don't think I have ever seen a kid playing in the street, here or anywhere else, what I have seen are footballs fly out in the road, there's a field the opposite side also which you do occasionally have rabbits/foxes run out in front of you at night. The point is when you have groups of school kids, dog walkers etc on the pavement all it takes is a little thing for someone to lose control at 60+ rather than 30-40 where your more likely to keep control.

I personally hate chicanes where they block one side of the road, when I was 16 i was hit by a double decker on my bike when I had right of way, and had SO many close calls with people thinking they can make it, or just don't simply understand the concept of them.

Flashing signs do make me think what speed I'm doing, as long as its not one that lights up even if your doing 20mph in a 30!?!?

It's exactly the same around here, I do sympathise. I'm no angel on the road and I'm not saying I don't break speed limits but not through villages or estates where there are numerous risks. If it's the same few lads doing it go and have a word. There was a kid round here who screamed up and down our road in his chavved up Fiesta, I went and had a 'friendly' word with him once and he stopped doing it. To be fair he was a decent lad and apologised. Most are! I used to be exactly the same at the age of 18 but you grow out of it, hopefully before you kill someone!

Actually put police officers in places where people commonly speed and fine people accordingly. I live near Leamington Spa and am always staggered at how many idiots exceed the speed limit down the main parade / high street in Leamington on a busy Saturday afternoon.. I've seen some utterly ridiculous behaviour yet have never ever seen any kind of effort by plod to do anything about it. It's baffling.

Phone local plod and ask them to do a couple of hand held speed gun check over a week. People in my village did this as we have a 3/4 mile straight where perfectly safe to do 70+ down that then still arrow straight goes into housing with blind driveways. People were still carrying on at 60+ into this 30 limit only slowing for the 90 degree bend at the end thats a good 1/4 mile past the 1st house and 30 signs.

What was the result? Every single person caught was female and on the school / playgroup run when police presented their findings. Most of them had children still on board. Obviously this isn't what the villagers wanted, they were hoping for the few chav's that cruise about - trouble is they all at least had eyes open, saw police and slowed down. Mum's were to distracted by the kids to notice the police and got caught. Exercise was repeated about a month later and one of the orignal mums caught was caught again so hadn't learnt anything however number caught was much reduced, so did appear to have the desired effect and on the whole slow people down.

I've not a problem with suprise speed checks in 30's - if you can't spot plod stood on the pavement in a hi-vis jacket pointing a gun at you then you deserve to be caught.
