Credit hire - a warning
Discussion
If you are involved in an accident which was not your fault and your car is damaged and needs to spend some time at the bodyshop you may be contacted by a company offering you a 'free' hire car.
It sounds too good to be true and it probably is.
An acquaintance took up such an offer and duly received an almost new vehicle while his car was being repaired.
For reasons he could not understand the repairs took rather longer than he anticipated. The bodyshop could not offer a convincing explanation.
When he eventually got his car back he was shocked to find that hire charges amounted to just over £8000. This worked out at over £800 a week. He was told not to worry by the company who hired him the vehicle. They were confident that they would be paid by the other drivers insurers.
Not surprisingly, the insurers refused to pay, so the solicitors provided by his insurance company commenced court proceedings on his behalf. The proceedings were not successful, and the Judge held that the hire charges were 'wholly unreasonable and unnecessary'.
The company is now chasing him for payment, referring him to the small print in the paperwork which he signed which states that he is primarily liable for their charges...
They have also billed him for a scratch which they say occurred during the hire period, but which he is certain was on the car when it was delivered to him. Unfortunately the car was delivered in the evening and the delivery driver insisted he sign the paperwork there and then. he also had to provide credit card details.

Sounds harsh, but if you sign stuff without reading it you're asking for trouble.
And as for signing for a car, to say that you've inspected the car, without noting damage, is ridiculous.
I totally sympathise as having been in an accident, you are anxious to get back on the road ASAP and sometimes don't think clearly, but if you enter into these things without reading what you're signing, you are asking for trouble...

I never had any problems with the company who looked after my non fault claim.
I was given an equivalent car (Z4 Coupe) for 17 days which cost a fortune but never had any problems.
I was suprised actually because all my car suffered was a "scuff" but I wanted it done properly & the total cost was horrific.

Sounds like somebody signed up to PH without reading and/or understanding the rules. A moderator has taken it upon themself to modify the title of the posting.

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/rules.htmWhen I was involved in a non fault accident and my car had to be taken away for repairs, my insurance company sorted out a hire car (from Avis) and all was fine.
As per some other people I didn't check all the paperwork but I did make sure to inspect the car, which had a dirty great scratch down one side which wasn't noted on the paperwork!

Which does not answer the point in my earlier post at all.If no specific company or business name is mentioned, and it was not, then 'name and shame rules surely do not apply. If your view was correct, then presumably nobody could comment on, for example, 'garages'. Good!
Let this be a lesson to all those people who think it is ok to be liberal when they think somebody else is picking up the tab!
£800 a week for car hire, Idiot!
I had somebody drive into the back of my stationary cay in parking place on the office car park a couple of years ago. Oddly by time she had completed the claim form and instructed a 'Credit Hire' company it seems I had reversed into her. Anyway her Insurance company didn't persue it but the Credit Hire company went straight to the MIB and they paid out, first I knew about it, was a bill from the MIB for just under £2k. I furnished the MIB will all the evidence including statements and pictures taken at the scene. The MIB are now persuing her for the £2k. I hope it ruined her Christmas.
'F' in parasites the whole industry and anybody who chooses to use them to aid betterment.
