Guys,

Im 20 years old, bored as heck of my current shredfacet mobile and looking at buying something with a bit more get up and go.

Ive got 6k to spend, insurance is not a real problem, clio 182 is only 900 quid a year, just the ridiculous like honda civi type r's and focus ST2's are out of my reach, what should I get because i've got as much idea as anyone at the moment, too many cars to choose from. users experience in whatever you post would be great.

Few criteria i need to meet,

0-62 in less than 8 seconds
preferably diesel
mpg above 35
comfortable on long journeys.

thanks
Ash

It's only recently that diesels have become properly quick, so your options are limited.

Maybe look at Golf GT TDi 150bhp, and the Leon Cupra with the same engine. Not quite 8 to 60 but a remap would probably do it. Ibiza Cupra with 160bhp is another option, or maybe Fabia VRS +remap.

I imagine a Mini Cooper S could probably manage 35mpg driven gently.

My car would fit that

BMW 320 td (compact)
52 plate

0-60 is about 8 seconds, its 150bhp
averages 50mpg

Should be able to pick one up for quite a bit under 6k

So basically, you want to play Traffic Light Grand Prix in a frugal diesel cruiser?

Do you mean 330d? I suspect you'd struggle to get above 35mpg in a 330i.

I averaged about that with a mix of town and motorway driving. Plus, they're ultra reliable.

How often do you do 0-60mph sprints?

Bit left field but £6k should get you a decent Jag TDV6?

8.1 to 60 apparently in the S-type.
Low insurance as they're not a typical boy racer car.
RWD smokin
40+ on a run

Cool in a not trying too hard way.

My 182 Cup gets 35 mpg average, over 40 if you're careful. Big service with belts is a bit expensive (around £800) but other than that - nippy, high 6's to 60, comfortable, excellent handling and relatively rare. I've only seen two in the 2+ years I've had mine whereas at the weekend I saw four Type R's on a 50 mile journey smile

This is a good suggestion, will probably be down to what isn't seriously painful to insure though.

Exactly.

+ How has the OP singled out a RenaultSport 172/182 which is capable of doing sub 8 sec 0-60 and averaging nearly 30-35mpg and then state he wants a diesel.

Why a sodding diesel? how many miles do you do? In the grand scheme of things i rather splash an extra couple hundred quid a year and have a car i really enjoy that does say 27mpg than save a few hundred quid driving something I don't really want.

For me id take a look at yoru lifestyle and establish what you want from a car, can you go for a 2 seater eg S2000, Elise, do you fancy a hatchback eg mk5 Golf GTI, Honda CTR, do you fancy a coupe eg CLK, 330CI, or do you need something with 4 doors eg a Seat Leon Cupra R

No I may have the wrong idea really, 0-60 the wrong thing to want, I want more a diesel cruiser that when i put my foot down in 4th at 30 pulls like a train all the way through to 100

Why do you want something diesel, instead of something petrol that can average 35mpg?
because from experience petrols dont average above 30mpg, my current car quotes 44mpg combined, i drive it like a grandad most of the time and average 300 miles to a 10 gallon tank

How the hell have you got insurance of a 182 for £900?

A 1.2 Clio would set me back more than that and I'm 20 as well.

The difference in MPG depends entirely on how many miles per annum you do.

I do no more than 5k, so the difference in fuel bills from 40mpg in a diesel to the 28mpg in mine is pretty much 0.

So how many do you cover a year?

I'd go for a BMW 330i or 330d. Both over balanced rear drive handling and also a lot of comfort on longer trips. The mk3 MR2 is another good choice - better to drive than the BMW, but not as good on the motorway.
