I've just received this email from the Hotel am Tiergarten at Nurburg - this is Sabine Schmitz's family hotel:

"SAVE THE RING as it is under serious thread
New Nurburgring by Lindner Hotel chain group and the German Government, partners in CRIME?? !!! ??
Many of you know about the NuroDisney development at the ring but few know about the background and politics. Just a short description of facts and what it means to you as a visitor.

The state of Germany invested over 400 million of taxpayers money in concrete buildings nobody needs and which fundings are based on false visitor numbers. In fact the Nurburgring is bankrupt since the maximum turnover is not even enough to pay the interest on the loans of this new investment.
New elections in 2011 (every 4 years) meant politicians needed to clean up. Therefore the state of Germany decided to GIVE AWAY!!! the Nurburgring to a Hotel Chain by the name of Lindner. After all these losses, the state of Germany is still telling that they made the right decision and everything will be back in profit soon now.

Lindner hotel chain does not have any experience with Motorsport and is only milking the treasure Nordschleife to fill up their Lindner ferien dorf, Lindner 4 star hotel, Lindner 3 star hotel, Lindner Disco, Lindner Roller coaster, lindner Museum, Lindner video system rental, Lindner race taxi, Lindner car rentals etc. This means the local economy is sidelined and therefore is a life threatening situation for us all here.

What does it mean for you as a visitor?
No free choice of hotel, restaurant, car rental company, instruction, video recording etc etc. They will FORCE you to use ONLY there Lindner this and Lindner that by combining laptickets with so called ‘free’ vouchers for their restaurants, hotels, car rentals, instruction etc etc.
This monopoly will result in high prices (already visible), no option of choice, no service, no quality of service and even higher prices in case of guardrail damages.
They will milk you till there’s nothing left and make you pay for everything this Government wasted on their castles in the skies.

SAVE THE RING, Sign the petition!
Because of the above, it is really needed that you support this battle for justice and sign the petition (Your Help is needed to "Save The Nürburgring" Petition) and post on Save The Ring - Non-Profit Organization - Founded: 1927 | Facebook

Please don’t let us down and i hope to see another 5000 or so signatures over the next week from all who love the ring and don’t want to see it go. Please forward this email to all your email database since we need all the help we can get.

Best regards from the Nurburgring

Hotel am Tiergarten"

Click on this link if you are interested.I've signed it because I like staying at the Tiergarten and don't like the idea of only being able to access the circuit if I stay at a Lindner hotel.

Shirley the road is still owned by the German Authorities so if the current lease holders go bust they will just nab it back and someone else will lease it and maybe not be such a shower of prats?

Depends on the lease and their financial arrangements. Lindner is a big group and can probably take the expense. In any case there's one real asset (the Ring itself) which must run at a profit.

This is not about losing the 'Ring itself, but about losing the local infrastructure that it supports and that supports it, and having it replaced by a large, faceless, corporate group, that is reported to be hand in glove with the State.

Personally, I feel that part (if not most) of the charm about the 'Ring is the fact that it is a local attraction, put there for the benefit of the location by the State. It seems such a retrograde step to have it seemingly handed over to a group whose responsibilities are without the immediate interests of the local population.

Consider it signed from me.

Signed. I visited in 2009, and made a brilliant holday of it. I took a slow trip across France, and into Germany and finally to Nurburg. I'm sure many others make a trip of it like this too. I intend to return next year, so I sincerely hope money-grabbing (or more appropriately, money-losing..?) capitalists have not destroyed it by that time...

Cheers,
Steve

I would imagine that Lindner's lawyers will be VERY interested in this letter.

I would imagine Sabine et al realise they've got nothing to lose now. Their entirely livelihood is at stake.. so it seems like it's either come out fighting or go down. Fair play to them.

Why? there's nothing there that isn't true. They've borrowed up to their necks, realised that only a very small number of people will come to Nurburg for anything other than the Ring, and have had to figure out a business plan that keeps all of the crap they built afloat. Hence the price rise for the ring and all of the cross-subsidising of their stuff.

Agreed*.

I also doubt that they are going to try to 'tie-in' access with using their facilities. Of course there's nothing to stop them making it far more financially attractive to do so, but that's not the same as 'forbid'.

Personally I think it should be back in state or otherwise wholly independent hands - but that's not going to happen anytime soon. Is there a Competition Commission in Germany which could investigate this (i.e. the 'bundling' of completely separate services together - Microsoft got stung for this by the EU, nicht war!)???

* Despite any differences elsewhere...
