Is the M40 a congested motorway?
Discussion
If there's such a thing as a favourite motorway, then it's one of mine. I used to live in Oxford, so know it well.
As said, congested around Oxford bypass and Northampton when Silverstone's busy, but otherwise generally flows very well.
One thing I did notice about the M40 in particular is the pace of the cars in the outside lane. Average seems to be about 90mph. Average. Not unusual to see a succession of cars going by at 100+.
Amazingly quick after the 2 lane motorways in Scotland and the north east, where you have to accept that you'll be lucky to see 70mph most of the time.

Great to hear it- the M1 is a nightmare so it is one thing I'm looking forward to down there. Even if I could stick cruise on at 70 mph and leave it on for more than 5 minutes I'd be very happy! As said, congested around Oxford bypass and Northampton when Silverstone's busy, but otherwise generally flows very well.

Just be aware that they are doing resurfacing work between J4 and J3 atm.
Nah, that's finished now. Annoying expansion gaps as you climb to High Wycombe J4.I don't commute at 'rush hour' times, but I find the M40 very good until you get to either the A40 in London or Birmingham generally. Even if traffic is heavy it stays flowing, I can't remeber the last time I stopped on that motorway.
M40 is probably the least congested motorway in the South.
However, at the point it turns into the A40 to take you into London it is probably the MOST congested road in the South.
If you were travelling into central London around rush hour then count on 35 minutes to get to the M25 and about 2 hours to go the remaining 20 miles into central london.

Hope the rental search went ok.
I use the M40 from J10 to J9 daily around 6.30 am and it's clear - I get off at J9 and the slip road sometimes backs up a bit, but the main carriageway is clear.
J11-J10 will be fine.

8 viewings are booked this friday, and we need to sign up for a property the same day- let's hope we're happy with one!

Any idea on where best to park and get the tube? I'd be working near Victoria station- St Vincent's square. However, at the point it turns into the A40 to take you into London it is probably the MOST congested road in the South.

Or would I be better off getting the train to Marylebone?
In 15 years fo regular M40 travel the worst time for travel is usually Sunday evenings around 6pm in the last 10 miles or so up to the M25. Beyond the M25 it's fine as others have said until you get to around Hangar lane.
We regularly uses the motorway to get into central london, and during off peak times the M40 / A40 is fantastic, we can travel from the M25/M40 intersection into central london and be parked in Grovesnor square at the weekends in less than 30 minutes.
If you try this on a Monday morning at 8am, it will take 2 hours plus....

I live near High Wycombe and for years I drove into London to work. It has become busier and busier to the extent that the journey has become soul destroying and ludicrously expensive (A minimum of £100 per week for just parking and congestion before petrol and wear and tear on 2-3k miles per month)Or would I be better off getting the train to Marylebone?
Then I tried motorcycling in for a year which was much better, but far too dangerous and now I get the train into Marylebone. It is like a breath of Fresh air. Perdictable journey times. Always get a seat from as far out as us. JUst takes the stress completely out of it. I would thoroughly recommend driving in for a couple of weeks just so you can experience quite how st the journey is by car, and then you will love the train. Plus it saves you a load of time.
That said, if you start work at 7 am and have free parking then ignore all the above
