Golf has been in the shop for a long while now, and the MoT has expired.

It's critically ill so no danger of it being stolen or driven, so I've not done anything about it.

In purchasing a new motor, I want to move the old plates onto the new one, but one of the issues is that I've been asked for the MoT as well as tax disc and insurance.

Is it going to be a problem that it's out of date?

Yup.

Pretty sure it must be MOT'd for a transfer. The DVLA website will give you the rules, but I'm 99% certain.

Right.... So given the problems with the car mean it won't get another MoT, and wouldn't have at thentime anyway, what on earth does that mean as a result?

Think it's gonna have to be a call to the DVLA tomorrow... frown

I'd be interested to hear how you get on, as there must be a way round it in such circumstances.

I'm sure you're stuffed, sorry!

To transfer the registration number, both vehicles must be:

* registered at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)
* available for inspection
* of a type that needs an MOT or heavy goods vehicle (HGV) test certificate
* currently taxed

From here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/PersonalisedR...

Not MOT'ble means no tax, so no transfer.

I think if it's been taxed within the last 6mth. you can still do it. (or you used to be able to)

Oh, wait a moment:

However, if the vehicle that currently has the registration number is not taxed, you can still apply to transfer provided:

* there is no break between the date the tax disc runs out and the start of the SORN
* the tax disc run out no more than 12 months before the date you apply

Was it taxed less than 12months ago?

But if you read on
direct.gov website said:

In true PH tradition, note the bad grammar in the last sentence.

edited; OK jshell you beat me to it.

Just click the link on my earlier post and it's on that page...

ETA: if less than 12 months, get the paperwork in now and you'll be fine!

If you don't have vehicle to put it on you could always put it on retention that way you've no worries, just more expense.

silly gotcha.....

Have a replacement in the pipeline, so swapping as opposed to retaining.

Seem to have wrapped that up! Thanks for the help!

Been through it, so, for the record:

DVLA give you 12 months to get the plate transferred off
