Anyone got any good car stories/experiences that they have had but never bothered to tell anybody because it was so unlikely or unbelievable?

Mine- Coming back from Chessington WOA one weekend several years ago with three of us in my 1989 1.4 astra(yes it was maroon) I was driving in the outside lane of M25 when the inevitable happened a beautiful DB7 flashes its lights for me to pull into the middle lane, I respectfully oblige. At this point i should note that we were already suprisingly doing 90mph. Then in my adolescent stupidity I think to myself 'I wonder if i can catch him/her(thats or her not 'catch him stroke her')
So we increase speed....we actually increase speed, pull into the outside lane again(we ARE going downhill) the car is shaking, he's in my sight, eventually we are there, I flash my lights, the DB7 pulls over FOR ME??!!
I check my speed-127mph
Now I know that isn't mega speed, but for an old Vaux ass 1.4 it aint bad.

Come on tell us all your unbelievables

I suspect the Aston driver thought:

a) Who the hell is this idiot tailgating me at 130MPH

b) I don't need to prove anything to him - I'm in a DB7

And left you to it!

If it's true then I can GUARANTEE that as you passed the Aston its driver was thinking, "wker".

Why's it unbelievable? Non-GPSed 127mph isn't that fast if conditions are favourable (downhill, wind etc). If you said you'd both accelerated from standstill to 127mph and you got there first, I wouldn't believe you, hill and being blown by a strong wind from behind or otherwise. smile

What sort of power did the Astra produce, 80BHP ? top speed in optimum condition about 104mph, if you had said 110mph then yes with speedo error that would be believable, also the AM driver might be mindful of not getting a driving ban for exceeding 100mph, but 127mph is Jimmy Hill territory I'm afraid scratchchin

Well Horatio I was driving from Shefield to Manchester and "accidently" took the Snake pass. Bloody Sat' Nav'. rolleyes I was driving a 1242cc converted Fiat Cinquecento Sporting happilly following the speed limit until a WRX driver decided to try and suck my car into his bonnet scoop. Plenty of traffic in the other direction so he couldn't get by. After a few minutes I thought "sod it" and had a play. Along the section of the road that's a private test track and has no speed limit of course officer. cop I had uprated lowered springs, pollybushes, 10mm spacers on each corner and road legal trackday tyres on Fiat Tempra 6x14 Inch wheels. Needless to say Mr WRX had enough power to catch up and keep up on the straights but needed to brake for corners. Braking for corners is a alien consept in a standard Cinquecento let alone one that was being built to be a tarmac rally car. Mr WRX was getting braver as we continued and was doing a good job keeping up in some of the corners as well. Until we reached a double apex right hander. Mr WRX hit the first apex, braked and hit a drystone wall as he understeered off the road for the second part of the corner. I stopped to see if he was ok. He was fine but the car needed a new bumper, wing and indicator lens.

The most likely response from people when you tell them that story will be to call you a tt, rather than say that they don't believe you.

However my personal response is both.

A few years back I remember being in my trusty old Punto cruising along the M25 at a nicely legal 70mph when suddenly an Astra (a maroon 1989 1.4l if I remember rightly) flashed passed me doing at least 127mph, probably more if I'm being honest but I was simply overawed by the speed. I knew my next move could only be to overtake them so I dropped two cogs and floored it. The rush of instant power was immense and I could quickly see the maroon rocket coming back into view. I could sense that my overtake would soon be in my reach but suddenly as the speedo hit 88mph my flux capacitor kicked in and before I knew anything about it I was back in 1955. This turned out to be a bit of a problem because as the M25 was still yet to be built but that's a whole different story.

Sorry this is a story slating thread rather than a story sharing thread. The terminal velocity of Corsa if you drop it out of a plane is about 120mph so in theory it's possible. After all the AstraMax is still the fastest vehicle in the world. wink

I will add my only unlikely story.. and will probably get a similar barrage of insults back but I did find it quite amusing at the time.

I owned a MK4 Golf GTTDI PD115 at the time.. had come round a roundabout and was about to head up a reasonably steep slip road onto a local A road. At the top they'd coned it down to one lane for some roadworks. As I was proceeding up the hill I noticed a Porsche Boxster coming up on my right (I was in the left lane of the slip road) and it seemed obvious he was going to try and get past and dive in front of me.. which does always bug me a bit!

Now I'm not sure if the Porsche was just in the wrong gear / not in the power band but I put my foot down and seem to be right in the peak torque for the TDI and lunged ahead like a stabbed rat and ended up getting to the A road before the Boxster. He proceeded to sit an inch behind me with his main beams on all the way through the roadworks before roaring past me.

Pretty childish but funny to humble him in an oil burner. Again, I'm not saying for a second that a MK4 Golf TDI is going to be a match for a Boxster in 95% of conditions but I think he was just not in the right gear and I was!

As he was sat behind you I would have dipped the clutch and pumped the throttle a few times to fill his vents with black smoke. hehe
