I'm toying with adding a TR6 to my toy collection so I was out in one up for sale yesterday. I'd seen James May's video talking about how the TR6 is the blokiest blokes car there is and I've heard of Z4s being talked about as hairdressers cars and I wonder why when the two cars are so similar to drive. In fact BMW own Triumph so you could even argue that the Z4 is todays TR6. The Z4 Coupe certainly looks similar to Triumphs old GT6!

Every convertible seems to be referred to as a hairdressers car by somebody or the other.

Not sure, but the TR6 is definitely very masculine in shape and character. Also remember, power steering is for wusses and electric windows? lets not even go there..

I bet the Z4 has a wind deflector and AC too, to keep the hair in check.

The TR6 was A Man's Car back in the day when only A Man could harness 150bhp.

And of course, now that we are all handling hundreds of horsepower we have all become utter driving gods.

(Either that or there isn't really any skill required to 'handle' a road car, no matter how much power it's got. smile)

I haven't heard the Z4 being called it to the same extent as a lot of other similar cars.

Usually by someone who for one reason or another can't have a sportscar.

Getting into the TR6 it is amazing how similar the two cars feel.

Yes, the Z4 now has AC, a wind deflector just like all other cars have had modern additions but both cars have looks which only a mother could love and deliver what they promise.

The one thing that the TR6 delivers thugh is that feeling of stepping back into a scene from Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes.

TR6 is a bloke's car because one needs to be able to balance carbs, change points, rig up dubious roadside repairs and generally resuscitate it on most journeys hehe

Same with the MX5 which I've always seen as a very feminine/hair dresser car but everyone on here raves about them. It's all personal preference and opinion.

Talking about the v8, if you change nothing about the z4 but the addition of a V8, does it make it a proper mans car?

The Z3 was a hairdresser's car in original form because it was so slow. The Z4, and especially the Mk1 Z4 was a much better proposition and I don't think deserves to be a hairdresser car at all.

I agree but unfortunately most people would describe as such. The only convertibles that aren't thought of like that are TVRs, Elises, etc

Well I have a TR4 & a Z4 Coupe - my wife hates them both so I guess they are both bloke's cars

I think the answer to this is a look at the thread "People who think they know about cars but blatently don't" or whatever it's called.

I know there are some small engined Z4s which are more "show" than "go", but a roadster with a massive bonnet where you're sat closer the back wheels than the front ones is a man car IMHO.

Never understood the 'hairdresser' jibe when applied to RWD sports cars. I've always reserved it for convertible versions of run-of-the-mill hatches, with no sporting or luxury pretentions at all, just a folding roof so the owner can show off their hairdo to the rest of the world.

I think there is something of a Healey 3000 about the Z4 coupe, just my opinion having a Z4C, & knowing Healeys quite well.

Reminds me of the GT6. Nothing wrong with that. But then I like the look of the conv too.
