I've been pondering a wheel upgrade..

I run R18/225/40 tyres on my car.. I dont know how much the wheels weigh, but for arguments sake lets assume they weigh 11kg.. and can upgrade to a wheel that weighs 8kg..

The tyres will still weigh the same, so.. would you really notice the difference?

Well, when i first bought my westy it had oz super t's on it.

225/50/16's on rear

205/45/16's on front.

Went and bought a set of pro race 1.2's

185/60/13's front

195/60/13's rear.

I lost 5 stone from the car!(took the spare off)

It's a totally different car now, nimble and more compliant.

Wheels , suspension, hubs , wishbones , brakes etc are all classed as 'un-sprung' weight, reducing he unsprung weight makes a massive difference. Say for intance you remove 11kg of unsprung weight on each corner (44kg) as it's unsprung it'd be equivelant to atleast 88kg of sprung weight removal, so to get a similar response you'd in theory need to remove 88kg from you vehicle, this isn't quite a correct calculation as unsprung weight makes a direct handling difference atleast 1.5x greater than removing the equivelant sprung weight, I.e lighter Brakes , hubs , wheels etc would sharpen up the the handling etc whereas removing sprung weight would have a similar affect but not quite the same................if that makes snese it's a miracle.

Volk TE37's. Full stop the best wheels in the world for me. Had them on my old MR2 Turbo and they were so light it was silly. Not cheap mind but worth the money.

Just dont confuse tham with the cheap copy's as there are many about.

You'd probably only notice the difference on track. Do 17" wheels fit over the brakes, it could be a way of getting lighter wheels (and tyres) for less.

For really light wheels, you need to go for forged, but these typically cost a lot of money.

A good compromise in weight and cost are OZ's new Alleggerita which use a new forming process, and are exceptionally light wheels considering they're not forged.

Not a chance I'm referring to Rota wheels, theyre the cheap copies. Rays Volk TE37 will set you back at least £500 per wheel in a larger size but they are soooo worth it. Try to find a set to pick up and feel the weight, there isn't any!!!!!

Sorry.

We got a bit mixed up there..

Rota do a lot of copies of the forged wheels.. that's what I was referring to. The Rays wheels are about the best you can buy.

IMO Rota wheels are just cheap after market items.

OZ Allegerita are pretty good, 6.2kg from memory for 17". Makes a massive difference to the steering and suspension response IMO.

You'll certainly notice the difference on the road in terms of ride. F=M*A, every time that wheel goes over a bump it's forced back toward the car. Halving the weight of the wheel halves the force with which it's pressed back towards the car, making the bump less jarring.
