Musing on cheaper petrol?
Discussion
I was thinking about how we all fill up as we leave a country that has cheaper fuel.
What would the legality / practicality of buying a tanker full in a low tax country and bringing it back for personal use?
I presume you'd have to buy it in the EU to avoid any more duty. I presume you'd have to have a safe way of storing it. I guess petrol only lasts a short time. How many tankfulls are in a tanker? How long will it last?
I also presume that HMRC would close down this idea if it actually worked.

Bad idea really you will need a tanker first then someone to drive it to where ever the cheap petrol is then put petrol to put in the tanker plus many other factors it be cheaper to buy in this country get used to it im affraid. Also i bet it not that much cheaper anywhere else well apart from america of course.
You know i was thinking the same thing this morning.
People get away with bringing lorry loads of cigarettes into the country and selling them on, so how hard could it be to bring a petrol tanker back and sell it on? (however highly illegal and absurd it sounds, it has to be possible)
And before half of pistonheads go off on a little high and mighty rant, this is just a hypothetical situation. And i was simply wondering if it had ever been tried before.

I doubt it is possible - EuroTunnel wouldn't carry it, and I can't imagine the ferry companies would either.People get away with bringing lorry loads of cigarettes into the country and selling them on, so how hard could it be to bring a petrol tanker back and sell it on? And where in the EU has suitably cheap fuel?

what stopping someone labeling up some fuel with a dash of additivie in it as "fuel system cleaner" or someother kind of maintence product and selling it as such avoiding the tax?
Nothing apart form the absolute raping C&E would give them if caught. You can fuel your car on anything you want so long as you pay duty on it, and as soon as you power your car on it, it becomes liable. This is what they have to say about red diesel & kerosene use in engines:

TBH, the punishments don't seem as severe as I expected.
Given Customs limit the size of the fitted fuel tank on a truck to 2,000l (IIRC) via safety interpretations and "construction and use regs", to avoid hauliers making excessive surreptitious imports.
There were some trucks where almost the entire tractor chassis space had been made up into several tanks, totalling almost 5,000l, but when full you are carrying an additional 3 tonne over the regular tanks which might negate the benefit. It is also well iffy to transfer pump heavy fuel oil between vehicles without the proper facilities....
The carriage of bulk fuel would be notifiable to ferry and/or eurotunnel and VAT & duty would be payable on import, and you would have to reclaim the VAT & duty paid in country of origin etc.
So, it is impossible.
You would stand a better chance with getting a 40' container of cocaine in, and then using the profit to offset the higher fuel prices.

on the right there, just shy of 30 litres of petrol, 7.3 Riyals, works out to about £1.20. or 4 pence per litre!
Just need to find a way to get it home now!

What the fk? Crude at $90/barrel is about 36p/litre, how the mouldy biscuit do they manage to be selling the refined product at not much more than a tenth of that?
Mainly cos they are the ones who sell it at 90 dollars a barrel and it don't cost that to take out the ground i would assume ?tubbystu said:

Ah. That was the answer i was looking for. It would appear that HMRC is ahead of me.So, it is impossible.

I think I'll pass on the cocaine idea. I have read Layer Cake.
