Just seen this SLK in the Classifieds, quoted as "Huge spec".

Now apart from the fact that most of the long list that follows is standard equipment (yes, even the "heated rear screen" the "electric windows" and the "power steering", praise be!), they've added extras that the car in the photos clearly has not got.

It says it has headlamp wash but there's no sign of the little cut out sections in the bumper just under the headlights that the SLK has with this option.

It says Xenon headlamps but as far as I'm aware Xenons have to come with headlight washers, see above...

It says DVD player, yet there doesn't appear to be a screen.

And it says "Harman Kardon sound system", yet it appears to have the standard stereo, Harman Kardon is only available with the in built sat nav unit or the COMAND system, both of which replace the standard stereo.

I'd be more than a bit put out if I travelled a long way for a "huge spec" car to find that about half the quoted extras didn't exist...

Why the fk has someone put an air freshener in a convertible? Just open the roof if it smells!

And in a similar vein, why do they advertise them with nonsense prices?

Like this 2008 22,000 mile SLK for £200...

Because the carpets are damp from a poorly fitting roof.

The low price is so when you select "Price (Low to high)" its the first one you see. Simples.

And whilst I'm on the subject, this always looks good on a twenty five thousand pound car...

Photoshop anyone?

Same as the people who would be 78 miles rather than 78,000. Just so that it appears in more of peoples searches. I am instantly put off by adverts like this.

I did wonder if that were the case, but since I actually have no idea how much it really is (and it's annoying) I'll just bypass it out of principle.

When placing a trade advert on autorader their software populates the spec' fields automatically based on the reg number, its often wrong, and it includes all that stuff that no one needs to hear about - if the dealer is lazy he wont edit that bit hence all the garbage about headrests, rear elec windows abs etc.

I understand that, and fair enough, but why then deliberately add random extras that the car does not have?

Isn't the van much more likely to be cloned on a day to day basis...?

Me too.
This and the OPs point really get on my nerves when searching for new cars...
The latter is especially annoying when they miss out important bits of the spec and/or history yet have a page full of standard equipment (which are always listed as options?!).

I would guess that the car in the ad isn't the car thats for sale, or more likely there is no car for sale. The first pic is of a US spec Merc anyhow. I'd avoid.

it just part and parcel of buying a car these days.

Always expect a car seller to lie and stretch the truth a bit to get a sale. To make an average car look something special.

IME you can tell within 5 mins if the seller is bluffing.

Common ones are spec listed as xenon headlights but it just has ebay special xenon bulbs not the proper factory fit xenon upgrade.

Theres a car dealer near me that lists every car he's got as 'sports' eg Astra SXi sport, Focus ST sport, etc and then in the spec its sports seats, sports suspension, sports wheels all on standard spec cars.

As others have said - pic one is a US spec car, so if they cant be arsed to photo the right car, jog on!

In a way that's better than the right car, wrong spec. Maybe they've got it coming in.

But if that is the case they could at least put "car due in, photos of similar car".
