I've currently got an E46 320d. It's probably worth between £5500-£6000 private sale (04 plate, 87,000 miles.)

I don't really do mega miles, in fact I've done only 6000 in the last 12 months, so don't really have a need for a diesel. I want to get a 330ci and the ones I'm looking at are around £4-5k.

If I go to a dealer and try to part ex my car, say they offer me £5k for trade in and I see a car on their forecourt for £4k, would the dealer give me the £1k difference?

I've never heard of a dealer giving cash back, as obviously they want you to buy a more expensive car, but has anyone ever done this?

I'm sure it has a name?
I did it once, Subaru to a Granada and a two thousand pound cheque.
Dealer called a backward trade.
Didn't care what is was called I was skint.

Yes, i've done this recently. p/x'd my car and got a £2K cheque back.

Go and speak to a couple of dealers and see how much they'll give you. Obviously won't be as much as selling privately, but it does remove all the hassle.
