Thinking of a Thule Karrite Odyssey 380L for my E36 Saloon for camping purposes. It would appear that my newly acquired roof bars are the correct dimensions and distance apart but this box is 150cms long so it will overlap the roof.

Would this be OK?

Sorry but complete load carrying and camping newbie biggrin

Cheers

It'll be fine. If it overhung the front or the back of the car it might be a concern, but it won't.

Cheers, it will just overhang a bit at the front over the bonnet and the same over the boot.

I'm hoping that 380L will be enough. If it will take all the lightish stuff like clothing, airbeds, sleeping bags etc and then the boot can take the tent, folding chairs etc

you might be surprised how little you can fit into roof boxes, we borrowed one for camping and i was not impressed, plus there was a 50kg limit

Don't pack it so tight that everything is trying to escape. The additional lift caused by aerodynamic forces can cause latch or hinge failure at speed. I spent some time retrieving sleeping bags, pillows and duvets from lane 3 which had sprung to freedom from a genuine Merc top-box last year.

Think I'd be investing in a couple of ratchet straps for additional peace of mind.
