Not strictly a Porsche related question but you are a knowledgable lot!

On a previous car purchase about 3 months ago I paid half of the outstanding balance and financed the remainder. The day before completing the deal the salesman rings me up to offer a paint protection and gap insurance package for a bargain price, which I accepted. When I went to pay for the car I paid a much lower deposit than I thought we had agreed but the addition of the insurance package changed the numbers a little.

Phoned today by the salesman to say that they had made an error, could I please pop in and give them an extra £1000! I said no. Just checked the paperwork and it all adds up correctly, the dealer discount on the car increased thus reducing my deposit with the financed amount the same. An error on their part.

Is there any way they can get me to pay additional money?

By appealing to your good nature and moral sense of fair play? From experience though most people seem to think it's OK to get one over on a car dealer....

Why not? Dealers will have no qualms at sucking the last single penny from a customer. I know that they have to make a profit but the size of the profit is utterly ridiculous at times for sometimes fairly shabby service. Tell 'em to ram it!

Do you know how many times I've been offered a pittance on a trade in? The same old tired excuses as well - the colours wrong, too many miles, the wheels aren't round enough! And then the same car sold on for £1000's more. Where's the sense of fair play there? Car dealers would sell their souls for an extra £50 profit, IMHO of course.

Thanks for demonstration my point more than adequately. rolleyes

I usually find that the best deals are the ones where both parties are happy and understand what the other wants from it. Perhaps that's why I have customers come back repeatedly and some have become very good friends over the years. Likewise I have good relationships with suppliers.

It's fair to say though that if someone does show me a complete lack of respect (such as the expectation that my aim is to rip them off) then I am likely to look on it less favorably if they do want to do a deal, to make it worth the hassle of dealing with someone like them (or I may just make an excuse so I can avoid them altogether), but that's reactive rather than predatory.

After you had stopped laughing and said no, what was the reaction ?

Can you imagine what the response would have been if the shoe was on the other foot !!!

I know! He did say that the gap insurance and tyre protection policy would be void. TBH, not sure they could even do that, after all, I have signed for it.

If it was me...

I would now only deal with the Dealer Principle and negotiate.

I wouldnt pay the full amount, but I would pay something.

It needs to be a win, win

Only my Opinion!

You can just tell them to fk off of course... tempting!

Surely as you have paid a lower amount than agreed, you are happy to pay the correct amount? As I (and you) would expect a dealer to refund if they had over charged. You are not saying that there's a dispute, just that you underpaid through an error on their part?

In answer to the question of can they make you? If they have a good case (a written quote would be good) and a mind to, then I would expect them to be able to.

But it won't come to that as you are an honest person.

Oh and to all those whiners who go on tediously about dealers making too much profit...the answer is simple, don't deal with them, if everyone thinks the same, they'll soon go out of business.

Did you pay full amount for the insurance and get more discount on the car as a result? I ask becasue I used to work in retail - they always wanted to sell insurance so offered discounts if the customer took it. As it was illegal to discount the insurance (iirc? they never did it) the difference in price was always taken off the cost of the item. If the total you paid adds up to the total you expected then the dealer should take the hit; they can certainly afford to.

Did you not think to ask why the deposit was smaller than agreed?

If the deposit was larger than agreed would you have questioned it?

Bert, you should be president of the "let's drive car dealers out of business" society.
wink

Now, as I am such an honest person, how about you lend me that gt3 for the weekend? I promise you will get it back on Monday morn!

Well the deal changed with the addition of the insurance. I did ask if the deposit was correct and told that it was!

Hi,

As said before, you knew something was wrong with the figures but it played to your advantage... the fact its taken 3 months to come to light is amazing!

I would come to a compromise..? What sort of warranty do you have on the car is it something to do with the dealer ? if so I would want them on side if anything went wrong.

Make them an offer and see how they react.

Nobody can possibly comment on this without seeing your contract and paperwork.

From what you have said, you seem to have gained from the situation, so I am sure a compromise can be found. Communication is the order of the day I feel.
