Sorry guys, it's a boring one

Just taken a new job about 80 miles away, so I will be doing about 40,000 miles a year

Need a car that is

50+ mpg

Reliable

Decent at motorway driving

Under or around £1500

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Audi A4 1.9TDi? Get one of the 110bhp ones and you should see silly miles to the gallon, an SE will be a nice place to sit on the motorway with auto air con and so on. Should be plenty at your money so long as you don't mind high miles!

406 HDi. Either very, very reliable ... or an utter shed.

I'll be keeping the z for weekends,

This will just be a shed of a work horse

Could up the budget to 2k for a perfect car but the cheaper the better due to mileage I will be putting on it!

To add to my above, an example: my money would go into this with 12 months' MOT and decent history. I'm maybe biased wink but I never hear bad things about these.

Mk3 Mondeo TDDI. NOT TDCI. You want the older TDDI, they'll run on everything including strained chip fat.

Makes sense. I have a Honda civic for the same reason. Nothing special but it never misses a beat.

Look at my profile. Octavia TDi 110. I bought for exactly this purpose. It's unbelievable at this money for this function. Have a look how much (or little) it has cost me.

Can you put up with a (very) green shed? If so, this seems a lot of low mileage car for the money.....

Horrid cars. There's a very good reason it's done less than 4k/year, nobody would want to drive it any further.

To the OP, 406 HDi. 90bhp is cheaper to run for both fuel and repairs, no DMF for a start.

As said before Octavias are good as are Toledos and much cheaper than their VW/Audi equivalents.

Sorry, I disagree there. See, my Dad had one of these as his commuting car as he was charging mileage and doing 250+ miles a day. Once the warranty bits and pieces were sorted it went on and on. It was fairly comfortable and very easy to drive. Plus it was bloody flexible, easy to park. Agreed it was totally unexciting, but he had a convertible (Morgan +8 cool ) to play with.

His was an auto and he easily got 65+mpg on average. He finally got rid when he retired and it had 171k on the clock. It's still going strong I understand now with over 200k on.

So I'm better off with a 2.0 ish diesel rather than a small petrol car?

Skoda, a4, and 406 are all good suggestions!

Am I better off auto or man?
