Hi guy's, i had an accident in my car last week, and the insurance has deemed it a total loss, frown but it still holds my private plate. What do i have to do now to get my plate back? iv transfered it from car to car before, but never been in this situation. They are currently asking me for all my documents to be sent to them, log book, MOT, will i need these? Any advise would be greatly recieved.

Bad luck - I had this before Christmas and it's a right faff. No private plate though

I'd have though the insurers would sort it or at least be able to help. Another option could be to keep the salvage if it's not too much of a pain. This means you can transfer the plate at your own leisure and then flog the remains off. Depending on the car they'll usually let you have the remains for bugger all and shifting it with web forums/ebay is often simple.

Good luck

I had already thought of the salvage option, but i don't even know where they took it. Its not drivable, so there would be an unknown cost to get it back to my home. Then there is the storage problem, so not really an option.

It's still your car so get it put on retention.

Ok! but did you need all the documents to do this? as my insurance company is asking me to send them all to them.

I did this a few years ago, i rang the insurance company and asked them to send me a letter stating they had no interest in the plate from the written off car. Can't quite remember how i put it on retention, but it wasn;t difficult.

If you visit a local DVLA office with all the documents it might be something that can be done while you wait.

Have you ever been to a DVLA office? Seriously, they make the people who work on our railways look helpful
