Due to impending house purchase (and fuel prices) I am looking at reducing my car costs. Through my company scheme I can get the Match 105bhp DSG for £325pm all in. Seemed like a reasonable deal and also mean that there is no worries about unexpected costs, important given the epic new mortgage! Has anyone driven one? Are they reasonably/refined/practical/ economical?

Cheers!

Don't expect it to be good to drive. Styling wise I think the Bluemotions look smart, however if you must go down that route I think I'd be looking at the revised Passat Bluemotion, newer, cleaner engines and a reported 1000 miles to a tank.

Not expecting too much out if the drive but I wondered if the engine was fairly quiet - got to order by tomorrow to get the deal and no time to look at one so views appreciated as buying blind!

It's not going to be too far off any of the 'standard' TDI models, so if you want a commuting work horse, that can return decent MPG , whilst being pretty reliable , you won't go far wrong with the Golf.

The 1.6 TDI engine is fairly strong, it pulled the mrs' Ibiza along well enough, she has the detuned 90ps version in her polo now and it goes well enough too. Both of these have been with a 5 speed manual so i'd imagine with an extra cog in the DSG it may help it along.

I'm not sure for the size/cost/economy you could do any better. Perhaps a Mini Cooper D Countryman or other VAG alternatives.

I don't understand this fad for quoting 'miles per tank'. Without knowing the capacity of the tank it means nothing. Will fitting a bigger tank make my car more economical? - more miles per tank.

I once had a car that travelled 620 miles to a tank, at 27mpg (it had a 23 gallon - 104 litre - tank). So more economical than my current 365 miles to a tank at 33mpg?

Not a dig at you, Republik, just a general 'I don't get it'.

For £357 p/month Lings will do you a C-Class blue efficiency which seems a far better deal than the golf but I suppose it's budget dependent.

I'm just quoting the TV advert! Official figures say 65.7 mpg, which for a car of it's size is very decent. Tank size is probably 70 litres?

The Golf is including all running costs apart from fuel so I think these will add on a fair bit to the Lings cost

But it's still useful information. I would love a car that did 1000 miles per tank, who enjoys filling up?

Tank size is indeed 70 Litres.

So you would have to average 65mpg for a whole tank of fuel to get 1000 miles out of it...

You'd be going slowly anyway - I can't imagine a 1.6 TDI with 105BHP paired with a car of the Passat's not inconsiderable bulk would have any chance of going anywhere quickly!

Sounds ridiculous but could be true. Let's assume you're going from UK to Germany and back, with a big tank you will be able to stop only twice both times in Belgium where petrol prices are way lower than in FRA, NLA, GER and GB.

Only thing to be warned is the Golf Bluemotion is based on the entry level 'S' trim so as such its fairly basic and runs on little 15" alloys. Other than that the latest Golf is a great all rounder and the best in its class.

I'm awaiting delivery of my new Golf Bluemotion company car.

I've read up on the Bluemotion technology and it seems impressive stuff. Whether it's as good as they say it is, remains to be seen.

All Bluemotion vehicles are exempt from the congestion charge if that's something that affects you OP? Apart from that, it has start-stop technology and is lowered/has bodywork changes to make the airflow more efficient or something.

Very very good company car tax wise!!
