Following on from the other days dream car related job thread and the admission that I would truly love to be a motoring journalist (I'm fully aware it's not all AMGs in California, Audis in the Alps and is more likely to be Matiz's in Milton and Peugeots in Prestatyn) and was just wondering how Garlick and the other fantastic writers(okay I admit it, his name was the first one that popped into my head) at PH started out? Any tips you'd give for a crazy person who wanted to break into the arena?

I know this may all be a pipe dream for my career asperations, but heck, you don't ask, you'll never find out.

Apply to work at Haymarket? They take plenty of people on in all different kinds of entry level roles.

Competition is stiff for editorial jobs though, hence it pays rather badly compared with even Ad sales for the first few years at non manager level.

And for balance, don't forget to ask Twincam16 how his writing career is going.

A mate of mine writes at said company.

And he had done a LOT of work exp (including some at HM), had written for free on various websites, and not only that was competing against a huge number of people for the same job (which on the face of it, isn't very glamo, compaired with PH/ Autosport etc) which paid little above £17k (in London).

So it is a tough industry to get into, and survive with!

At the risk of stating the bleedin' obvious: are you any good at it?

Why not try writing some pieces and sending them to the PH team and other publishers and see what they think? I know that PH has on occasion published reviews and news stories written by mere members wink - maybe if what you submit really stands out they'll be more inclined to give you a try?

rofl Theres a name I haven't heard for a while.

Seriously though OP why not just write, ive had a 2 page article printed in Porsche Post magazine, they didn't pay me but it was printed, a mate of mine had had an article printed in BMW magazine again they didn't pay but its a start isn't it. Get a few printed to start off and who knows they may comission you to write more.

Not bleeding obvious at all, in fact perfectly valid question. From the feedback that I have received from the pieces on my blog (which I have neglected to update for an age, and no it's not a shameless plug hence not including the web address), my free format writing has been praised although I know personally I still have a long way to go. The submission to publishers idea sounds like a plan though. I guess more than anything though my biggest fear is that I've left it too late to try and get myself into a highly competitive industry. Yet at the same time I don't want to wake up in ten years time kicking myself for not even trying.

I tried writing something for PH and all I got was an injunction and restraining order. With hindsight, I probably shouldn't have written it in my own blood.

Still he doesn't get my name right.....

It's all lies actually. I was found in the wild and left in an institution. One day I escaped and ran as fast as I could. I ran as fast and as far as possible, crossing the first road I came to when BAM, I was run over.

A bloke called Dave hit me, driving an Allegro Sport. Taking me home to patch me up he gave me a cup of tea and I explained my situation. Knowing the police would be looking for me he sold the Allegro and bought a Marcos, he also changed his name to Ted to cover his tracks.

I stayed as his adopted son and the rest is history.

Dang it and there was me hoping an unwritten requirement of being a motoring journalist/writer was hairy palms and an insatiable appetite for porn titled "Grannies do it Stannah Style" and the likes.

And then there's the story about just why he has such an attachment to old Benzes...

"Feel that engineering" he said.
"Sod the engineering, cop a load of these" she replied...
