Hi I've had my C2 now for nearly 3years and have been thinking of changing it,just feel I need a more powerful car (thinking hatch again) so any suggestions would prefer something quite subtle but quick enough for a weekend of hooning budget is £8k thanks in advance

E39 530i
S2000
E36 M3

Few more specifics would help :
How many seats?
Is insurance a problem? (age)
Running cost limitations
Trackdays ?
Etc

2 seats = Z4 3.0, S2000, 350Z

4/5 seats = RX-8, 330i, many many hot hatches.

A nice Clio 182, with low mileage would come in well under the 8k.

The original civic type r is a cracking, reliable car and you can get a decent one for 8k.

Focus ST, Astra VXR, Corsa vxr, Megane 225 are all possible on that budget though miles may be a bit high.

peugeot 206 gti 180 - can get a decent one for 4-5k, decently quick and a comfy car imo.

You'd get your detailing gear in one of these.

Better strap it down well though...

R26 would be my bet, although you won't get a great example for £8K I doubt. Or if you want a to do a bit of modding then you might manage a decent medium/high mileage 2005 182 Cup and get a stage 1 turbo + big brakes fitted. Performance-wise that would rape the R26 but it'a a bit of a fuss to get it sorted out. If I keep my Cup I'll probably get that done at some point.

I'm sorry for being really anal about this, but it cheesed me off. What do you mean by original?

For me Original is the JDM EK9, but for the 8K mark it sounds like you're thinking more about the EP3 CTR.

Back to the OP's question.

How about a DC5 Integra Type R? Or maybe the DC2 if you're not fussed about the age.

Slightly aged Audi S3/A3?

SEAT Leon Cupra?

Alfa Romeo 147 GTA V6? (Hear the rumble :P)

At that price, probably (over)due a cambelt change. If you like Trophys, the one make forum (cliotrophy.co.uk) is a good place to look for cars for sale. And they are great cars, believe me.
