Me and Mrs Oppo have a Volvo V70 Tdi, on Wednesday she drove 2 miles from work and the car cut out and will now not re-start, as a matter of precaution we changed the fuel filter and it now appears there is no fuel getting to it even though there is over 6 gallons of diesel in the tank.
Does anyone have experience of this or are there any obvious things to check - I don't know if there is a fuel cut off fitted but if there is I can't find it!
If possible mods could this stay in here for more exposure as the Volvo forums a bit quiet!

Yes it is, coupled to a manual box if that's of any significance?

Lift pump in the tank expired? No recent fill up errors were there?

Has the timing belt snapped? This engine will have an old mechanical injector pump driven from the timing belt. Either a conventional timing belt on the crankshaft and camshaft or an auxilary timing belt running from the camshaft to the pump on the back of the engine.

No fill up errors is a certainty as for lift pump etc I don't know if it has one, where are the Volvo mechanics when you need them!

MJK I will investigate that angle, I know it's had a cambelt recently but I don't know about a pump belt.

Ok gents, having had a poke around the belts are all in tact, relays have all had a tap and their blades checked for corrosion etc, all relevant fuses have been checked too.
As well as this the fuel filter now seems to have fuel in it - when I opened the drain at its base fresh diesel dripped out.
But the bloody thing still wont fire!!!

Have posted in the Volvo owners forum, you'll probably get something there?

The fuel pump is run on a separate belt at the opposite end of the engine to the timing belt. (timing belt on the left, pump belt on the right as you look at it.

I'd guess that the pump belt has failed.

What mileage? when were the timing belt and pump belt last done?

officially t/belt is 80K pump belt 40K

As I've already stated both belts (cam and Pump) are fine, as for posting in a Volvo forum, a few minutes on google drew a blank, also wheres the harm in asking the PH massive!

Ask the VOC lot and the T5D5 lot (I don't think t5' will be able to help too much but certainly worth a try).

Never heard of this, usually the Tdi's are bloody bullet proof. Best of luck sorting it by the way smile

Thanks for that, our A6 with the same engine in has been faultless, we bought the Volvo for the same reasons as stated above!

I don't suppose you have hit any big potholes recently?

Maybe the fuel cutoff inertia switch has been activated. Should be details of how to reset it in the owners manual.

Could this be a simple key related immobiliser fault? I presume it'll have one...

Lift the rear seats, there should be an access hatch under the carpet (you won't need to remove the carpet to get to it) if there is a pump in the tank.

Did you bleed the diesel through when after you replaced the filter? Air locks in the system will stop it firing
