Best place to get a third party warranty?
Discussion
Well I do believe I may have found my SLK.
Can't have it tell end of next month due to seller getting new car so nothing's ever done till the monies changed hands and the ink's dry on the V5, but it's looking very promising.
It is a private sale, so absolutely no warranty, no comeback, although the price reflects that.
However, cautious fellow that I am, I would feel more comfortable with a warranty.
Just wondered whether anyone had any advice regarding third party warranties, or suggestions of who's best to use?
Appreciate your thoughts chaps and chappesses, as ever.

Interesting suggestion!
Just had a look and my bank does breakdown cover and car insurance, but not warranties.
Good idea though, thanks.
It does in a way.

You put your £500 in there (or in premium bonds) & earn 0.5% interest then if you need the money you can take it out and spend it.
In other threads Warranty Direct is one of the better Warranty companies.

No naming and shaming here
But if your car goes into a main dealer for repair they know WTD doesnt pay full main dealer labour rates so the dealer may be tempted to tell you up front that WTD wont pay so that you pay in full. Also WTD wont pay for wear and tear so will take a percentage off the parts price after they've discovered the trade price. Again the main dealer may try to pass this difference on.
If you take your car to a back street specialist with half the labour rates, WTD are more willing to pay what they ask. You'll still lose some for wear and tear.
In both cases you'll probably spend some time discussing the outcome with WTD ( why is it WTD?).
With some other warranty companies you might not get past the 'wear and tear' response. Some you might.
No naming and shaming

You can always phone up the manufacturer customer service (fobbing off) to see if they will contribute, but they'll insist you use a main dealer and guess how much overall you pay after the contribution?
Unless you have an inkling, use the Bank

Having thought about it overnight I think £500+ is a bit extreme on what is not a particularly old or high mileage car. If I keep it three years that amounts to over £1,500 in warranty costs. I think I'd rather put that toward getting it fixed, at last I can have it done to my satisfaction then.
Also, having done a fair bit of research, there doesn't appear to be any fundamental weaknesses with the car I need to especially protect myself from, although appreciate there are some complex parts like the folding hard top and supercharged engine that would be expensive if they failed.

My Maserati came with a Platinum warranty from Warranty Wise. In the last nine months I've had two faulty sensors and an oil seal and connection pipes between the gearbox and oil cooler replaced. With a main dealer's costs, these repairs topped £2,000 in total
The warranty covered both jobs. No quibble at all from Warranty Wise and quick payment.

Interesting, thanks. The warranty covered both jobs. No quibble at all from Warranty Wise and quick payment.
Just tried to get a quote from them, keeps coming up "A Database Error Occurred".

Warranty Direct.
I bought a Laguna 1.9DCi just out of warranty and called these guys for a quote.
£35 a month.
I thought 'Sod it, I'll risk it'.
They called back the next day and offered it for £28.
I took it.
Over the next three months, the gearbox broke. The turbo then died.
Both were paid for (excluding £100 excess each time) by Warranty Direct.
I was pleased I took it.
It saved me about £1,500.
Arguably, an SLK will be more reliable, however the bills are likely to be higher if something goes wrong.
Call them, get a quote. Don't accept, wait for the call back and lower offer. Then consider it.

Cracked it, my fault.
They look really good actually.
They cover "failure due to wear and tear" (you can opt out of this but I'd keep it in).
They offer main dealer rates (again you can choose to change this, I've kept it as is).
And they offer the option of an excess (I've put in £250 as anything under that is easily covered, and any higher, even £1,000 excess, makes little difference to the premium.
And it comes out at £477 for a year or £774 for two years or £1,059 for three years.
Given it covers "wear and tear" (so you've not got the situation of them trying to wriggle out of it for that reason, and you can take the car to the main dealer (so straight back to Mercedes fully covered in my situation, happy days) that seems extremely good.
I think I may well go for that, thanks very much indeed.

Warranty Wise
Rubbish.
They won't even quote for vehicles ove 100,000 miles.
5 year old, full main dealer Toyota sevice history,
I am past the 250,000 miles, and still reliable.
May me I need look else where.
Suggestions?

I need to see if they'll cover main dealer rates and "wear and tear" first though.

I'm not sure I blame them. Over 100,000 miles you're opening yourself up to some big bill potential I imagine.Warranty Wise
Rubbish.

Also, they only cover up to the value of the car. Once past 100,000 miles, for many cars that's not going to be a lot of cover.

Careful with the wording
It covers failure due to wear and tear
Check it gives you all your money back including wear and tear. Also check what's covered carefully

Warranty wise has quentin wilson on the front page
The only other thing to remember is that someone has to pay for all those people in the warranty call centre. It may come in a roundabout way from the difference in trade price they pay compared to the full price you'd pay, or it could come from premiums

I think the premium you pay dictates whether it can go to main dealer or not, i.e. You can pay extra per month to allow repairs by a main dealer should a problem arise.
I worried that the warranty company would collude with the garage to blame the car owner in certain circumstances, so take it to a garage you trust.

Warranty wise seem to offer the more comprehensive cover, even down to AC/Multimedia faults, however it's reflected in the prices, £740 (12 months) for me compared to £508 at warranty direct (13 months). I tend not to bother with warranties for anything, the idea being the money saved will cover repairs, however the two things I make an exception for are washing machine (had a couple fail at 1.5-2 years old) and Plasma TV, which was bought years ago when they were pretty new tech, cost £2k at the time, the panel failed during extended warranty so got replacement TV.
Well I can tell you of 2 examples where Warranty Direct wouldn't pay for a failed Turbocharger (leaking oil badly and whistling) and another where they wouldn't cover a Auto box replacement. (Gets stuck in 1st gear)
I work at a main dealer. They are also notorious for putting ANYTHING down as "Wear and Tear" AVOID
