I read an article inthe Daily Wail that says all cars now have to be insure, 365 days a year.
If owners allow a gap between policies, they may be liable for a automated fine of £100, even if on your driveway or in the garage.
Pressumably, you can still declare SORN though.
Anyone know anymore detail, or is that about it?

It's called Continuous Insurance Enforcement. There've been about 500 threads on it.

The options are simple, if your car is taxed then it must be insured, if not SORN it and all's well.

Sounds like Daily Mail scaremongering, not workable imho, a car is your property and if it is on your own land and not driven on the public roads your risk as to whether to insure it, people have barns full of old stuff on sorn.

Will never get through, pointless !

My Mum told me at the weekend there are plans to scrap the SORN system, with all vehicles needing to have RFL at all times.

Apparently there are too many people with vehicles declared SORN still using them. So go catch the offenders would be a reasonable course of action, not penalising the rest of us who obey the rules.

We currently have a motorcycle SORN'd and uninsured untill the better weather. It is sitting locked up in our garage, why shouldn't we be able to do this?

I don't see how this can easily be implemented though.

It seems that I have been asleep under a rock and missed 500 threads on it.
It already is "through" it would seem and SORN is unaffacted; still seems a little roug though.

Incredible, truly, truly incredible.

Do any of the posters who've posted after me pay any attention to what is happening in the UK?

There was talk at one time that all motor vehicles would have to be "registered" in some way, including race cars & other vehicles which would never be used on the road, I think it was also either scaremongering or the pwers that be realised it was completely unworkable.

Sounds like a non-story to me. Why would you have a car taxed but not insured?

Exactly, but that doesn't stop everyone picking up the one-off scenarios about selling a car that's not insured, but having it taxed makes it more desireable.

Well, if we look way, way back, as far as Monday, we'll see that you posted about the abolishion of CGT Taper Relief, that occured in 2008. You then stated how "up to date" you weren't.
Stones and glass houses.............
Anyway, thanks for your input everyone.

Yep, but I searched for CGT threads before and wanted a couple of other questions answering too.

My dad did (or was, until I told him about this) as he has the car for sale, it's garaged but the insurance was about to run out, there wasn't much point in SORNing over the Christmas period so it would have been easier to just leave it taxed but not insured, in the garage for a month or 6 weeks.

So it'll cost him about twenty quid to get a month's insurance and it's probably the only time he'll ever do it in his life? Still sounds like a non-issue to me.

If you have a classsic you can keep it taxed all year round for free smile and insure it for a few days or weeks when you feel like it

Lots of genuine people do, I do myself. Reason, well I have 4 cars and three full time insurance policies. My 4th car is a summer only car, and on my three other policies, I can insure the 4th for a temporary period, fully comp, up to 7 times a year per policy. And for a weekend, for example it it just over a fiver!

So I can insure it for up to 21 weekends a year, plenty for the about 10 weekends I will actually drive it. But each MAy I MOT it and tax it, usually insure for a month in order to tax it an use it at Le Mans.

Its sorned Nov to May though.

So for me, I am screwed, car will be £300 a year to insure rather than c £50.
