I know this topic has come up before, but this is always an irritation for me.

My car may not be worth as much as many on here, but its pretty much immactulate and i want it to stay that way. So i always park at the quiet part of the car park to avoid door/trolley dings, usually takes me an extra 15 seconds to walk to where i want to be anyway

But why is it so often i come back to find another car 8 inches away from mine whilst still no other cars for a further 100 yards? Why do they have to park next to me?!

This is what i came back to today. Parked the Z4 against the wall in the far corner of an otherwise empty multistory. Only had to pop out for 10 minutes to drop something off.

I came back to find an otherwise empty car park with exception to the civic parked right up to the edge of my side of the bay directly next to mine.

Yes this is a picture of two cars. What is wrong with these people?!

They can't see the lines, so they guess where they should park by how far away they are from you.

Some people look as if they'd implode if they had to park 'freestanding', the only way they can park is by comparing the angle to/distance from another car! One way to solve your issue is park badly yourself, slant across the bay slightly and make it difficult for them, you'll end up on the bad parking thread though.

Most people are sheep.

What you're witnessing is the subconscious herding principle in action.

It's just queue mentality. They probably didn't give a second thought to the fact that you might not want them to park next to you. You were simply the beginning of the queue so they parked in the next spot.

However I totally agree with how annoying it is.

So true, I used to park my scooter just in front of my flat, normal London Controlled Parking Zone. Not a designated motorcycle bay. But after few months it just looked like it, people slowly started parking their bikes next to my scooter. Now you just can't park a car there, there's always 5-6 bikes parked smile Muppets.

It's the herding mentality, not a lot you can do.

Because we're British, we stand in queues & even join the back of queues when we don't need to, we like to do things in a tidy & orderly fashion. If there were randomly parked cars all over that car park it wouldn't be very orderly.

Not saying it's right, I'm just saying that is how a lot of people's minds work.

Did your car have any dings in it when you got back?

If not, maybe they thought, "they've obviously parked over there because they look after their car, perhaps it's a better bet to park next to them than in an empty space where I could get anyone park next to me?"

No it didn't luckily, i practically sprinted to check though!

Your logic is sound and not a bad idea if you think about it. But given the number of times its happened to me, particularly by drivers of battered cars, i think its unlikely to be most peoples thinking.

In a car park with literally hundreds of empty spaces, I had a fellow pull up right next to my car to park. The difficulty was that being next to a pillar, and a LWB car, there was not much room to actually try and get out (a wall in front) so lots of Austin Powers turns.

He was an older guy and I can only describe the look of utter distain on his face that I dare be in "his" car park. I have never experienced it before although read about this odd behaviour on these threads.

Wierd, wierd man.

In January 2004 the now wife and I took my then 4 week old car for a day out in Whitby.

Whitby is pretty quiet that time of year, but nonetheless I parked at the far end of a big car park, at least 100metres from the next car.

Came back to find some absolute heap crashed into my car!

Guy had been parked at the opposite end, but left his handbrake off... gravity did the rest, what are the odds?

We call it car park effect in our house. We do it now for fun. Park as far away from anyone else as we can to minimise door dink chances and then see how many cars are parked near when we return. Guarantee there is always at least one.

In a similar vain, this car park regularly highlights the divide between those that park next to other cars and those sensible folks that prefer to keep their cars away from others.

This happened to me yesterday. I was in my 550 which has large doors so parked a couple of spaces away from the only other car in that section of the car park. Whilst I'm getting my briefcase out of the boot a guy parks so close to mine his passenger can't open his door fully. I had to squeeze in the gap he left me and move it several spaces further away.
