Right,

This is probably for the more mechanically minded people on here, but on the way home tonight my Saxo VTR made a really strange noise, i can only describe it like the sound of a belt slipping but at a much lower frequency/pitch?

Anyway, it only happened for a second or two and then disappeared, i didnt think anything of it until later on the motorway it came back but this time the sound was consant, i couldnt get it to go away, i tried dipping the clutch and using the brakes but the sound stayed the same regardless of RPM, the only thing that did make it go away was if i accelerated or dropped below 10mph

I decided to stop quickly to check that everything was ok under the bonnet and it was, i also sent a quick text message to my girlfriend letting her know id probably be arriving home on an AA truck, i couldnt of been stopped longer than 5 minutes, i set off again and it was gone, totally quiet?

30 minutes later, it was back again, same noise, same symptoms, i carried on like it for 30 minutes until i got to the next service station, again, couldnt of been stopped for longer than 15 minutes, so off i went back on the motorway, and nothing, nothing at all for rest of the 100 miles home?

No vibrations or anything, but i did notice that if i accelerated round a bend the steering went very light and almost felt disconnected from the car, its never felt like that before? also seems to be more keen to tramline in the road now as well

Also might be worth mentioning the cars standard

Any thoughts?

Possibly a stone in the brake pad area.

Funny you should say that,

Ive had that happen before in my old Skyline and it sounded nothing like this, also that shouldnt affect the "feel" of the steering should it?

My thought as well.

Although mine wasn't a stone but a large seed from a tree that got caught between the disk and the backplate. Sometimes made lots of noise and sometimes none at all.

No. Didn't read that far.
Have you checked none of your coil springs have snapped - can't really see why that would cause a squeal unless the broken end was sitting funny against the shock housing and this usually produces a more boingy sound (tech term). Has the car got power steering as it could actually be a loose belt?
