Mot failed today on the 330d propshaft rubber coupling.
Got it fixed as today was mot expiry date at maindealer where the mot was carried out.

Cost ...£310 incl vat ouch.

Is that a common failure on the E90? Is it a wear and tear item - what sort of milage should they last note my car just done 75k & and 4.5 years old. Auto.

Is there anything I can do to extend it's life or stop doing to keep make it last.

Also advisory two front tyres wearing low on the inside edge... I've done 13k on them and they were 3mm when I got the car so I'm guessing that's reasonable life/wear rate

true.
I'm guessing it is a wear and tear item so 75k life...bloody pricy though still I guess this is the cost of running a £38k car optioned up. Still I fear people will buy these cars when they are £6k and then get some nasty routine servicing items. I'm not strugggling to get by so this hit isn't a bug deal but still an annoyance and not something I want to have happen very often.

Genuine question Welshbeef, and ignoring the obvious clue given by your ID, but are you scottish?

I only ask beuase the only people I've ever known that seemed to count the pennies quite as avidly as you were scottish.

I'm not saying that's a bad thing, just wondering?

As to your OP, a £300+ bill at £75K, hardly the end of the world, I expect you could have got it done for half that at an independent, which is why it's always worth taking you car for an MOT well before it's due... gives you time to get the job fixed without getting ripped.

And you questioning whether 1.4mm of wear on tyres after 13K miles is reasonable? Err.. well fecking miraculous if you ask me, have you developed some kind of anti gravity device to help save the rubber? smile

I'll dig out the fail notice but from what the customer service lady told me it is an mot failure it had a split which could leak oil and cause the diff to lock??

I watch the pennies that's for sure but don't compromise on quality.

As for tyres yep I'm gentle on them and only ever but michelin pilot sport I've tried different rubber in my youth but now only Michelin it's a bit more but the extra life you get and better stopping distance and lateral grip is a winner for me

Not propshaft then, but driveshaft. and that could well be a bit iffy - not because of an oil leak but because grit could foul the CV joint that I guess is in there, and that could be very bad indeed.

Not main dealer bashing here. Honest.
Only they have the expertise and marque knowledge to spot such serious faults as hairline cracks on a donut, I'd have thought. Cough. wink

sounds like it's good to have it replaced - apart from it's MOT requirement.

In fact it's probably better then to get maindealer who is honest as they will know exactly the weak points and get them changed to avoid future much more costly repairs.

My main dealer did my donut back at 90k miles, and book time was 45mins to change, the part was about £60, total bill was under £150, but that's an E46 330d, maybe they have to remove the exhaust or something to get to the donut on the later cars??

Your quite right, as it wouldn't make it to the testing station in the 1st place as it would be standing at the side of the rd. with a blown head gasket.

If running costs are an issue for you, I'd suggest you start using public transport instead wink

Just trying to evaluate running costs. This is something I'd totally excluded from wear and tear routine servicing.

Also need to decide what to do re warranty keep it going or not and tp what level. ??
