I have a story to tell about possibly the worst hand car wash in England.
When it comes to cleaning my own vehicles I am usually the first one out there on a Saturday morning taking great care to use the correct products to make sure my four wheeled investment is kept in top condition but every now and again after some Winter M6 bashing I get a cheeky mid week “hand car wash”.

I am out on site today and in an unfamiliar area so considering my nice Candy White 60 Plate car is rotten with salt etc I decided to pull in to a random hand car wash attached to a golf driving range.

Now admittedly the first visual clues of said hand car wash weren’t great, we’re talking a small patch of mudded area with a few paving flags over the top and a slanting car port but I thought hey surely they are all pretty much of the same calibre.

So I hop out of the car to allow the chirpy Chorley man to crack on with his work. He then brings out the tools of his trade, the first being a TINY pressure washer with what turns out to be a broken lance attachment that only manages to squirt a direct sand blasting like jet that hoses 1mm at a time. He then spends maybe 30 seconds “rinsing” the car, completely missing the back and the filthy lower half of the car. Intervention was then needed with the suggestion that maybe he should continue to rinse. Another 30 seconds of rinsing passes.

Now not able to look he then pulls out a large extendable brush and dunks it in a black rubbish bin full of cold soap water and starts with the nice gritty lower regions of the car moving up towards the roof. Mid way through sees some semi arsed wheel cleaning using the same brush that was then reintroduced back to the body work.

The still perfect yet dirty paintwork of my car was now surely gone forever.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse he then uses HIS HAND over the car to catch any areas of dirt that were missed by the brush!!!!

To say that I was fuming was an understatement but I had passed “the point of no return”. I’m going to put this down to a life lesson I think and in the future stick it out until the weekend.

I just hope that no punter ever decides to take him up on either his mini or full valet where a polish process takes place!

I was too commited by then, any cleaning tips given fell on deaf ears. I dodged the chamois option though. punch

I know I know, exactly what I thought when I left. I think the vision of my large bottle of Meguiars pollish at home got me through it.

Sounds like the time I returned to the mother in laws to find she had cleaned the wifes car which was sat minding its on business in the garage quitely collecting dust
How did she clean it
with a dirty bucket of water and ......a used kitchen sponge / scourer !!

the car that had been in pristine condition jet black, now had deep swirls in the paintwork ,

She was very pleased with her efforts until she saw my irate face .....when i then precceded to show her the damage and explained how many 1000ru it was goiung to cost to get it professionaly polished out ..

Dont touch the f...g car again

Don't congratulate yourself too much just yet. Next time you feel the urge to let Mr Chorley or one of his cousins near your P&J with their dirty rags, I'd suggest cutting your losses the moment things start looking iffy.

Give the man a fiver for his "efforts" and be on your way before he has the chance to do some real damage.

Just pay for a paint correction, will be fine. It will have just been a £300 car wash.......

I'm always amazed at the number of people that will use the 'car park' car washes where there is clearly not an easy supply of clean water. That being said most hand car washes seem to be okay and my local one on the way to work does an excellent job.

I had a similar experience, albeit not as bad.

Basically it was one of these Eastern European jobbies which i had been going to all over the winter and they had been fine until this one occasion.

They washed the car fine, but when they came to dry it, one of the ****ing stupid women dropped the cloth on the floor, picked it up, gave it a bit of a shake and resumed drying the bonnet with it. I raged and jumped out of the car and shouted at her to stop and asked her if she really thought using a towel, that had fallen on the floor, to dry a car with was clever. Literally, almost simultaneously, one of the others who had been drying the back of the car came round with a piece that they had broken off. I was speechless.

I got in my car and drove off and i have put it down as a life lesson to never use these hand car washes morons again.

When i was younger and working (read messing about) in a friends dads garage, the receptionist used some brillo pads to clean the lower portion of her paintwork that had some tar like dirt stuck quite well to it, needless to say we found this very amusing

Wise words, I simply can't defend my lack of balls to just drive off.

why did you think this was a good idea to start with?
why didn't you stop him when the alarm bells were ringing?
