Popped home at lunchtime to let the dog out for a piss and found the new issue of Auto-Express on the doormat.

Had a quick read through their road test of the new Focus 1.6TDCi Zetec v's Golf 1.6 Bluemotion v's Astra 1.7CDTi.

Basically the Focus is marked down on having a smaller boot than the last car, not being as economical as the Golf and not being as quick as the Golf. Also the interior quality isn't up to the standard of the VW either. The review concludes that the Golf is the better car.

Looks wise, the Focus isn't a particularly interesting looking car. The vertical tail lights are gone, and the car looks more Korean than European to my eyes.

So, have Ford made a mistake here? The car doesn't seem to move the game on very far, and the lower spec models don't seem to have any major advantages over the model they replace.

Is the Focus following the same path as it's ancestor, the Escort?

I dont think so. Remember this is the first truly "Global" Focus. I think they needed to be relatively conservative...

I've driven it already and it easily beats the Golf

Will it still feel like you're sitting on a bar stool when driving the new one? Never understood why the seat was mounted so high in Focii.

Give it 6 months and the deals offered will mean you pay no way near list price making it very competitive next to the Golf.

The car in the review was actually the cheapest of the three, despite being the wrong side of £18k for an almost base spec hatchback. The options available mean you can potentially spec up a Focus to over £30k.

Very true , only a mug would buy a focus over an golf brand new . Used prices are different because the golf will be worth a fair bit more than the focus which was cheaper ( i think )

Recently had a go in a new RS , ok it's quick , drives pretty much bang on but on the whole the interior is a bit Naf . Proper tool if you don't mind having to wear a neck brace

They tried that with the Mondeo(Contour). It flopped. Me thinks this will go the same way, it's a horrible looking mess.

I had a good look around a new Focus late last year and not only is the boot smaller than the previous model but the interior also feels tighter in both front and back. The dash has some nice features but is very busy and is certainly not a match for the latest Golf in terms of perceived quality, but is better than the new Astra. The exterior looks pretty bland and those huge fake vents in the front bumper look odd on a basic spec car.
