Ok so this has probably been asked a million times but In the next 6 months I NEED to buy a car. Not too fussed about cost, although I need to insure it... Help?

I said I needed to insure it! :P

Would it be a bad idea to buy a brand new car?

How old are you, how many years NCB have you got, how much for the car, how much for insurance, what mpg are you looking for, how many seats, what type of miles are you going to do, big or small car, any track day use?

Yes. There's a reason why we all suggest buying a cheap car. You do not want your shiny new car battered after 12 months which, let's face it, it happened to all of our first cars in some way shape or form.

It all comes down to what you actually need in the car, coming on and say I need a car and I'm not fussed about cost gives us absolutly nothing to go on. For instance, do you NEED 3 doors? Do you NEED it to have some street cred? Do you NEED us to entirly make up your mind for you and thus decide what you NEED is a TVR Chimera, you will be able to get it insured it'll just cost a small fortune. Specifics and we'll be able to help, otherwise we'll NEED to be able to read your mind.

Think out of the box, try to avoid the "usual first cars".

The cheapest insurance quote I ever got was for a 5 Litre Mercedes, the most expensive was on a 1.4 Rover!!!

biggrin

In 6 months I'll be starting my placement so I'll need a car to get me from here to there. My father, being the ever so sensible one, says I need a 'reliable' car. I'm 18, not quite passed my test yet but getting there, and I'm unsure about track days atm.

Jensen Interceptor, you'll find the automatic easier.

Cheap too if you go for one like on Wheeler Dealers and you know Ed.

Automatic...? I quite like manual, isn't automatic considered a 'taboo'?

Astra Bertone Coupe ? wink

I'd go with a mk4 golf 1.4 or something for relatively 'cheap'
insurance and realiability-ish

I used to live here. I moved to there but didn't like it, so I moved back here again.

You're not really helping are you. Give specifics.
