Mrs J's 206cc is coming up to 80K miles and therefore is in the zone for a timing belt change.

I've just had an verbal estimate, from a local garage who are usually pretty competitive, of around £300 for this - £120 for the part and 4 hours labour.

This sounds very high to me.

Are my expectations (of circa £150 all done) realistic?

£120 sounds right for belt and tensioners.

Depending on design of engine, accessibility etc. 2 to 3 hours sounds right, 1 hour maybe if it's VERY accessible and easy to do.

Hourly labour is, what, £50 to £100 an hour these days, let's take a £75 average for example.

So, 2 hours is £150, plus £120 for the part = £270.

So your £300 sounds not too ridiculous.

Try sourcing the parts yourself for less than £150, they're probably adding a markup.

Anyway, ring round other places for quotes, start with Peugeot for a top end figure and how much is labour, you then know approximately the time required.

Dependant on where you are in the country I can recomend a good independant who may be able to help (very competative pricing, they're only charging me £230 for Hand brake replacement + Full Service and oil change on my 9-3)

Just had my Bora cambelt,(kit), done at National Autocentres, they charged £240 plus I had the water pump done at an extra £80. My local VW dealer is offering cambelt and kit change for £299. So your price sounds spot on if it's a dealer.

Bum. You're all making a lot of sense (apart from the "do it yourself" part - that's just crazy talk) and so I might just have to suck up the cost.

I was hoping that I'd been quoted something ludicrous, and you'd all go "£300? My garage does that for £50 and a pint!"

The only bit that looks high is the parts cost, I would call Pug + oem suppliers (euro car parts etc.) and see how much they charge. Make sure it includes tensioners, not just the belt.

If the water pump is cheap(ish), I would recommend having this done as, on many cars, the labour is taking the cambelt off anyway, they just then spend a short while putting the new waterpump in before they replace the belt.

Just had a diesel and a petrol Pug done for £550 for the pair. I was going to do it myself, but the magic book said that you need special tensioning tools. It can be done without them, but they still recommend getting it checked anyway.

As a note, one only had 50,000 miles, and the old belt was looking decidedly ropey....

Cheaper than an engine rebuild!

£3-500 I would say, its a bh of a job on FWD cars because there up against the chassis rail!

£150 isn't even close, sorry!

you clearly haven't had a look under the bonnet of your car.

There is virtually no space to work in and both engine mounts have to be removed to move the engine to the right. £120 for the part is correct. £300 is an absolute bargain, autodata quote a 5.5h job. Most places quote £500+

Also 80k miles means you're quite brave. 72 would be the maximum i would go on that engine without a change. Further evidence of that is that our 206gti's was changed a couple of months ago, and upon inspection of the belt there was a nice 3mm tear in it. Wouldn't have lasted much longer.

On both the TU and XU engines that are fitted to these the cambelt is a sod to get too but isn't that hard really.

£300 all in isn't bad. The cambelt on my old 156 JTD was about £600 as it takes the best part of a day to do and you want to change the water pump while you are at it which is only £30 for the part but it all starts adding up.

Can't imagine it's any different under the bonnet to a normal 206?!

My other half has just had her cambelt done by a company who came out to her and did the belt change on her drive. Took them about 90 minutes and cost £128 including parts and labour. Many would say it was cheap but her whole family has used them before and had no problems.

If you're worried you can watch them do the work.

On that basis £300 seems extortionate.

Did that include new tensioners? That is the big question.

Does it have the 2.0 16v engine similar to my girlfriends 206 GTi? If so it is very tight between the engine and the bodyshell which makes it a difficult job. A couple of garages have even said they're not interested in doing it!

I've been getting quotes to do the belt kit [belt + tensioners] and water pump this week which range from £680 to £470 from dealers to £450 to £250 from independant garages.

Fair point, it is a 1.6 so probably a lot more space to work. biggrin
