cry

Well my pride and joy has just killed itself, need to look in daylight, but judging by the low oil level warning, followed by rattle rattle then bang bang bang bang bang bang then KABOOM, nothing, I'm guessing it's terminal!

On the Plus side I have a spare car that only needs a few little bits fixing.

Anyway, my question is, what is the best thing to do with the Audi?

Strip it for spares?
Sell it as spares or repair
Scrap it?
Replace Engine?

It's a '99 2.8 30v V6 A4 SE with leather and buttonshift on the steering wheel so parts should be worth a bit, right???

Absolutely gutted! frown

(Oh and sorry to the tt that was driving 6" off my back bumper when the engine exploded, your car looked a bit oily, but then you shouldn't have been tailgating me, i was doing over 80MPH) rolleyes

Id just replace the engine as there could be too much internal damage to save it, but you could always strip the engine to see the full extent of the damage.

I know the engine is knackered on the Audi, sorry to clarify the spare car that needs a bit of fixing is a Volvo, the audi is either getting stripped for bits or scrapped/sold as one lump! cry

If you like the car replace the engine with a one from say a rear end shunt.

I'd, stick it on ebay, as is, then if it, didn't then sell, would try to offload it in bits to an Audi club/forum, and after a month, scrap the rest....or as above, if a secondhand engine is affordable, just replace it.

Edited at first to remove a couple of extraneous commas but then decided to add a bunch of extra comedy ones. This post is best read using the voice of William Shatner.

Problem is cash, I have very little of it at the moment so need to turn the Audi into cash in the most effective manner....

If you need cash quick than I'd just sell the whole car as parts as you could get quite a nice amounts for the parts.

Not quick, just the most effective i.e. best return.

Not sure if it is worth stripping really???

Surely the gearbox and leather is worth a bit though??

Possibly a really stupid question, but one i really don't know the answer to.....if this engine is blown, beyond economical repair, would the insurance not cover it?

Breaking for spares will make you the most cash - but you need tools, time and space to do it.

The next choice would be stuff a second hand lump in it and start using again - way cheaper than an engine rebuild

bd hehe

Got to weigh up whether you have time to strip it and sell it or just get rid of it as one.

Don't worry, we get it at work.

Oh its what? Well I'll just call the insurance company then.

I see your problem. If it was me I'd do whatever it took to get a replacement motor.

Is there no way you could borrow the money from a family member to replace the engine? fix the Volvo then sell that to repay any monies borrowed or is that not possible.

biggrin

The image (for those who know) has been that low for ages. If anything the older cars (like this one) are probably the more reliable*. And the late-80s stuff deserves the image...

* as long as they don't run out of oil... wink (Sorry)

I would spend some time on Ebay seeing how much various bits fetch, remove the 'low hanging fruit' (leather, alloy wheels, maybe audio equipment, possibly lights, MAF, ECU etc) and scrap the remainder.

Unless you are good with spanners (or are very time rich and money poor), I would stick as much as possible to things that you can unplug or unscrew and avoid stuff that is difficult to remove unless there's a ready market for it. Otherwise you'll end up with it in your shed for the next 10 years or end up doing hours of work for a 99p Ebay sale.

fwiw, I am also about to scrap a car and to avoid problems I shall be careful to obtain a certificate of destruction from an authorised treatment facility (ATF). See here for details - even scrapping a car involves officialdom now.
