Focus alloy knackered by oobster, on Flickr

Heading along a dual carraigeway, road was starting to narrow into one lane each way and a roundabout was approaching. There was an HGV on the inside lane and if I was in the car myself I would have booted it past and made it back in with sufficient time to slow for the roundabout.

My 3yr old daughter was in the car though so I pulled in behind the HGV and started slowing for the roundabout. There was about a two car gap between me and the HGV and as we got closer to the roundabout a half brick-sized rock pops out from under the HGV - I have no time to react (doing about 35-40mph) and run right over the top of it.

New alloy from Ford = £168
New tyre = £60.

Not significant in the big grand scheme of things but still a bit sore on the wallet.

You'll be lucky if that's all that's damaged. I'll be fairly impressed if your steering is still straight? Depends how big a rock it was right enough.
if its done that to your wheel even with the tyre to act as a shock absorber, imagine what it might have done to a wishbone/track rod etc etc

get it on a ramp and get the allignment checked as a minimum!

New wheel and tyre are on and the car is driving straight with no 'pull' to left or right when letting go of the steering wheel. No nasty clunks or noises either, and no notchyness through the steering or anything.

The car is (hopefully) going to be traded-in sometime in early Feb but if anything seems amiss in the next few days I will get that corner looked at.

No you didn't hit a rock you hit a pothole

You can claim from the council for potholes

The sooner we make it cheaper to fix the roads then pay out claims the better

biggrin

I did (briefly) think of that, but no - I won't be claiming against any local authorities. Just one of those things so although the loss of £228 doesn't sit comfortably with me, claming for pothole damage would be even more uncomfortable.
