Have been considering changing the mx5 for a while now.

Not for any particular reason other than I fancy a change.....

Now to go from one extreme to another I fancy some comfort in my life, leather, toys, a larger engine?

I have my eyes on the following:

MG ZT-T - prefer the touring. Not comepletly disregarded the saloon but do prefer the touring. Would be looking at the 190 2.5 v6.

BMW - e39 - probabaly a 528 - happy with either touring or not. Like both.

Saab 95 Aero? Possibly the hot version?

Now the kicker - budget is 2 - 3k. Bottom end is preferable (isn't it always?)

Which woudl you choose? Why?

Any horror stories?

All have their benefits,

Build wise its

BMW
MG
Saab

The Saab will be fastest, the BMW the most fun to drive and the MG a pretty good blend.

MG
Saab
BMW

But then I would say that as I've got a ZT-T. All good cars though.

Interesting points.

From the question above....

If it came down to an Audi it would I think need to be an A4 Avant - don't particularly like the a6.

Not an fan of E class from this era / price range.

I just can't get to like the Omega - despite lots of people raving about them.

I was half tempted by the volvos but prefer what i've shortlisted.

Out of all you have shortlisted I would say the 528I as long as there is evidence the engine has been changed due to Nikasil issue destroying the bore linings it is a fantastic car. Reliable, decent on petrol when compared to 523I, and when all the toys are thrown in you can't really go wrong!

I think I'd go for the MG if you can afford the fuel consumption. They are very good cars and look phenomenal value for money at the moment.

In August 2010 I looked at same cars as you plus many more. Ended up going for the Saab 9-5 Aero.

Great car - quick, well equipped, spacious, comfortable, quiet. Not that the others on your list aren't.

MG and Saab are my favourites
gonna go MG, on the basis that you'll get a decent one for that cash
95 Aeros are around for that, but intergalactic mileage

Meant to say - I paid £2500 for mine with 68k miles. 2002 51-plate.

I was hoping for circa 30mpg on the motorway at least?

Jaguar XJ6/8?

Apparently not THAT unreliable and spacious compared to the MX5!

Alternatively, I have a Renault Megane with leather, climate and bags of toys (54 plate, 42k miles) and I fancy an MX5. Not quite the luxo barge you're after I guess!!

Jaguar X-Type 2.5 or 3.0?

AWD as standard. I imagine that a manual 3.0 version would out perform all the others on the list (0-60 mph in 6.6 secs).

Saloon or estate available.

Edit for spelling

Probably possible if you stick to the speed limit.
