I have been using my girlfriends 2005 Peugeot 107 this week as I am inbetween cars, however this morning half way into my commute it became a real challenge to engage gears 2 - 5. It will go into gear with some effort but there is some resistance and almost a slight crunch. If I match the revs when changing down to 4th it will not engage without grinding. The car has done nearly 40k miles mostly round town use until now. Could it be a worn clutch? Or maybe a synchro/selector issue? Gearboxes are always something I have taken a wide berth of, so I know very little about them. Any advice would be great.

Sounds an odd combination of problems. If you had trouble engaging, but it was OK when you rev match I'd say the clutch was dragging and that depending on the system it either needs adjusting or a problem with the master or slave cylinder

As it seems to be a bit odd I'm going for selection problems. If it's a cable system it could be as simple as adjustment or a worn component between the shifter and the box

Clutches are like chocolate in those. I seem to remember there being a recall due to faulty clutches.

My colleague's C1 is on it's 3rd clutch in 80k.

I wont claim the greatest driver in the world so wouldnt want to comment on my rev matching abilities, but prior to today it has never crunched into gear. My first instinct was a clutch problem as my mrs is notorious for riding it and holding it on the clutch to avoid using the handbrake, so will have taken a fair bit of abuse. As suggested if they are a know weakness then this fuels the fire.
