Help me on this one...
Impending small person means yet another post (by me) exploring options for a new car to replace my MX-5. Current favourite is a Freelander c. 2005 for about 8K, however, having owned a 924S in the past, it occurs to me that the back seats would be pretty much perfect for a small person, while the boot of a 924/944/968 could *probably* fit a pram....
So... has anyone successfully managed to squeeze a baby in a child seat into the back seats of a 924/944/968 and also got a pram in the back?
The girlfriend is going to go ballistic if the answer is 'yes' and this is my proposal for a 'sensible family car'....
Sorry, not a sensible only family car.
Would be ok for the occasional trip out but otherwise forget it.
Issues;
1. Your back, it's low and tricky getting in the back for an adult. To put a struggling child in a child seat = good luck.
2. Tiny baby seats face backwards. We are both quite tall and baby seat wouldn't go in the back of my wifes Audi S3 if the front passenger wanted not to be pressed into the screen. Also these seats tend to be lifted in and out whole.
3. Older baby seats face forwards but they still need a good amount of space.
4. What sort of pram? stroller ok, Bugaboo Chameleon (or similar) no chance.
5. Even if you get the pram in what about the other bits if you want to overnight? travel cot, high seat etc.
I'm looking forward to taking my sproglet (15 months now) out in the 912 this year but I'll be leaving the Mrs behind.

I like the idea of an RX8, but couldn't take the fact that they need to be meticulously looked after from new, and not all new car buyers actually care about that kind of thing.... Fuel consumption is a bit scary as well (got about 32/22 out of the 924)rx 8

Cerbera, like the idea, but would be shot on sight at first mention...
To the original replier - fair enough - I bought my 924S off a guy who was selling it only because his kids (by then about 10) didn't comfortably fit in the back any more - I doubt he had it when they were in baby seats!
A hefty part of the reason for letting my 944 go was the lack of rear car seats for my daughter. There seem to be no seats that fit the rear buckets, save for a long out of production Porsche/Britax collaboration. Even if I could have found one, there's no way I'd have trusted a secondhand car seat.
Both her forward and rearward facing seats fitted into the passenger seat tho. Unfortunately the missus wasn't prepared to sit in the back all the time.
I've got an accord snotter for now; but am considering the RX8, a Nissan 350gt or a Monaro for soon.

It's a shame the RX-8 has such a tempramental engine. I know it would have removed the raison d'etre, but if they'd just bunged the largest 4 pot they had in there (it fits because it's the same platform as an MX-5) it would be more or less the ideal PH car.

We've had two kids seats in a 996 turbo, had no issues with space. However the rear facing baby carrier was a right pain to get in and out so it's by no means a sensible car choice! Great fun though, and my son, aged 4 is already a petrolhead.
I wouldn't recommend it as a daily driver though, no space for a buggy or any thing bigger than a nappy bag!

Can't comment on the 944 but when I had my 911 I used a Quinny Zap buggy which folded up and fitted easily into the front boot with lots of room to spare. We actually did a 7 day tour around France in the 911 when my daughter was 9 months old and managed to get all the baby stuff in the car.
Don't let these negative people put you off, where there's a will!

Heres my "perfect family runabout:
Four seats, unlimited headroom, although a rear facing "newborn" car seat will need to go on the front seat - but theres no airbag so no great issues!
Heres a pic of the rear with the baby buggy storage device
Not only that, but you can buck the depreciation trend, and get cheap classic insurance, whats not to like!!
