Following on from the 5 pound fillup thread. If fuel keeps excellerating in price at the rate it is, Its going to become cheaper to run 2 cars if you want to have any sort of performance car.

So lets say this was the case now. You want to keep your p+j but need a daily thats insanely cheap to run. Then it needs modifying to become even more economical. What kind of things can you do to get a car to achieve higher mpg's.

The ones i can think of.

Fully strip the interior of all its weight. just a drivers seat even.
Run high tyre pressures
eco tyres instead of performance tyres
no spare wheel, ditch it for a tyre weld
Super lightweight wheels
other weight saving mods, even plastic windows?

What else can be done to create more mpg. I remember the european spec Lupo 3L had some great ideas. Though i have forgotten most of them.

It is mainly reducing weight of the car and adapting the way you drive it.

Or Changing to LPG/Chip fat type mods.

Some sort of small fibreglass bodied kit car (thinking of weight) + 1 litre engine or small direct injection diesel for chip fat/bio goodness + waterproofs ?

Depends on the sort of driving. Weight doesn't have a big effect for people doing long distances on flat ground.

Getting a new set of wheels in order to increase your mpg by about 0.5mpg, is a bit bonkers, as is new eco tyres! Run them at the max recommended pressures maybe, but if you over do it, and wear the centrea out prematurely, say £80 a tyre is a lot of MPG!

Work on aero, (amazing how many run rood racks with nothing on them!) obviously dont carry too much crap about, but just drive slower is the key. doing 70 on the mway not 80 saves a notceable amount of fuel, and 65 even more. But town driving is a killer no matter how you try it.

A few years ago when on a regualr comute of about 30 miles into town, I tried leaving super early, and just driving gently at the speed limits and found that due to lack of traffic, I got to my destination about 3 minutes quicker than I ever did hacking along max attack style, but leaving at 8.15am. So if you can arrive at work earlier and leave earlier, it's a good way of making a massive difference to MPG.

Then just try to redcue journeys. I try to nip into town and do a few things, every few days, rather than popping in every time I need to do something. Can knock 50 miles a week off pretty easily, and is the equivalent of about 6mpg!

How well could you bodge the aerodynamics to be a bit more slippery? Lower it, fill all the panel gaps and front grill (potential overheating problems)? Would it have a noticeable effect? Was thinking about this on the bog earlier...

Just buy something like the 106 1.5D. It'll do 55mpg all day long, more if you're cruising steadily on the motorway. If you do bother to service it, it'll cost you about £15-£25 to do it yourself. Sling part-worn or at best budget tyres on there at £10-£35 a pop and don't fix anything unless it is affecting economy, safety or getting from a to b.

Will cost you peanuts to buy £500-£750 and to insure, tax etc.

What is it with all these eco threads. I thought PH is about speed matters..Not driving miss daisy..

As soon as the price goes up all these threads come out.

To save MPG I drive with the radio volume turned from 11 to 10.

If you had 1000litres of fuel to last the rest of your life, would you use it to take a ford focus to the shops?

I bought a little Fiat 500 diesel for exactly this purpose. It has more than paid for itself in petrol savings.

But speed costs money. I think the point of it is to have more money for performance/fun cars smile

I wouldn't worry too much about getting around safely either in a 106......... (not that it can go fast enough to need brakes that work etc ;-)

Running an eco daily car is most peoples way of justifying the V8 weekender!

It does but like anything to me a car is something I enjoy and will therefore forgo other things to use it..

Driving like a retard to save some pennies just doesn't seem to fit in with the PH philosophy.

You know if I had 100 litres left I would still do the same thing I do everyday, drive my car and appreciate the moment for what it it..

If you are after super high mpg for the cost savings (and not because you want to avoid refuelling), then buy a diesel banger and run it on red. hehe

I don't think any of the other suggestions posted can top that for pence per mile.
