Basically looking for a replacement for the current Skoda fleet, and I want to get something a little more durable.

These Skodas are falling over like three-legged donkeys with all sorts of silly faults, from failing door locks to exploding (yes exploding!) clutches that take out the bell-housing.

Add to that the delays in getting parts into the dealer and I can have a car off the road for up to two weeks for something that should be routine.

Mistubishi and Toyota both seem to have a great reputation for reliability... Lancer is cheap for what you get, but although the Toyota is more expensive to buy, their D4D engine appears to be happy on 80% Biodiesel, which would save us a packet on fuel.

It's just working out which one is actually most reliable. Any experiences on here?

I've no direct experience, but from chatting to owners of various cars the Toyota seems to be higher quality than the Mitsubishi. I'm perplexed by your troubles with Skodas though; taxi drivers love them and the ones I've talked to have stories of unflappable reliability up to and above 200k miles.

We've experienced the same on the older A4 models. I think that Skoda genuinely became a quality product under the VW group, but both Skodas and VW's seem to have slipped in the last few years.

I'm suspicious that they are trading on their laurels but are cutting manufacturing costs to increase profit. We have had a VW Sharan that hasn't had more than a week on the road without a MAJOR mechanical problem since around 80,000 miles and 18 months old.

I know we use the cars a lot, and I expect things to wear out but I expect it to operate as a motor car at least most of the time hehe

I also don't think it's unreasonable to expect a manufacturer to keep spares in stock, or at least have them within 24 hours.

Can't help much with your questions, but i had a customer yesterday show me what happened to the clutch and flywheel on his caddy van. BANG!

Bits of bellhousing everywhere, clutch fingers missing, flywheel had to be mauled with a grinder to get at the retaining bolts because it was that badly mashed up.
Nice clutch design for sure cool
