I currently have an 18 month old Subaru Impreza Boxer Diesel with 18k on the clock. I need to downsize to a smaller and hopefully more economical car (smaller being the key!) OH has a 2007 Yaris which is a great little car and trouble free. I've therefore been eyeing up a Toyota iQ.

The problem is, the Impreza has got to be worth £13 - 15k and these are quite a desirable, if unusual car. The Toyota is therefore cheaper, even brand new. (I think I'd go for a brand new one).

Do you reckon a Toyota dealer would be willing to do a trade down to sell a new iQ?? Would I get some cash back?

Your thoughts please PH'ers!

If you do alot of motorway dont expect a good mpg from the 1.0 litre.

I got mine in October and Ive done about 5k in it. MPG has ranged from 45 ( thraping everywhere and playing in the snow). Had a high of 66 from driving on all A -roads but I really had to tease it out of it.

Great little car but I wish I had got a 1.3 as I do quite a bit of Mway work. Though 13k on a new one for a small car didnt feel right...thats Maser 4200 money just about.

Whats the mpg on the current diesel ?

The boxer diesel is possibly the only diesel I've ever driven which has naff MPG figures and a noticeable lack of low down torque. It's a pretty pointless engine really. It's unusual, and there aren't many about, but I think I know why hehe.

Average over the life is 45mpg.. I do a mix of city driving with the odd longer run. I used to just do m'way in it where it does 50+ mpg. The iQ would be used for a 20 mile commute mixing city and A road driving. I reckon the 1.3 would be the iQ I go for...

You'll average about 5mpg more in the IQ if you're lucky - is it really worth it for all the hassle and the money you'll lose getting rid of the Subaru? I'd say definitely not.

I don't think its a bad engine... more petrol like that many diesels, certainly not massively short of torque, but quite high geared which doesn't help. MPG isn't great really, but then again it has the 4WD drivetrain to carry around and boxers are never great for economy!

City and A road I would stick with the 1.0 as round the town with relaxed driving 55mpg is no probs as an average. Dont get the auto as apparently they suck the fuel like a well paid hooker....

Dont expect it to have any guts though and add another few minutes to each journey.

1A - yes I don't think I'll be saving masses fuel costs, although petrol is a wee bit cheaper than diesel. Road tax will be cheaper of course, and so will maintenance, but not by a huge amount.

The size is more the issue to fit it in where I park. Getting back OT, do you reckon a Toyota dealer will entertain the idea of such a trade-in? Can't help but think there is nothing in it for them! Maybe I need to find a franchise that sells both Scooby and Toyota?

Fair enough. Where was this out of interest? Even if they do a straight swap Scooby for iQ, I'd be happy, but might expect a bit of money to come back my way!

mini cooper d. 74mpg and a good car and free road tax.

if you need a smaller car smart cars do 85mpg but i don't like REALLY small cars.

they will change and maybe get cashback but you will be done over like a kipper. why buy new? a second hand cooper d would be my choice

You need to contact some Toyota dealers and get a few quotes. I'd say that a private sale and then go to a Toyota dealer with cash and a good base for bargaining on a pre reg or demonstrator is the way forward.

The IQ is a good car but it is an awful lot of money. Saving cash for me would be a new Aygo or C1, basic spec and drive it into the ground.

Have you considered a Subaru Justy twin cam. You might get a more favourable deal going Subaru / Subaru, rather than Subaru / Toyota.

I did Gwagon, but I think they've been discontinued.. Might list the Scooby on here for sale then. I'll pop into the local Toyota place, but expect to get done over! biggrin

The iQ is very expensive for what you get. An Aygo isn't that much bigger and its a whole lot cheaper.

I dunno.. just kind of preferred the look of the iQ, the bigger engine and more kit. I guess an Aygo wouldn't be totally out of the question, but would seem like slumming it after the Impreza!

You are always better off selling rather than trading in, in terms of value. Best bet is speak to them and see what they say. Then check private sale used prices and see if you think the money side adds up for you or not.

Mine was a toyota dealer in Aylesbury.

The aygo is cheaper and bigger but its naff inside compared to the IQ. I originally wanted an Aygo but after driving the 2 the IQ won hands down. Its nicer inside and also has a rev counter ( a must in my view) and it feels a bit different from the norm. I had a good deposit on mine so I got the rest on 0% over 2 years and with the fuel savings and running costs Im about £20-30 a month better off including the repayment. The 5 years 100k warranty is good to have as well.

Things I dont like;

The stereo is crap and hard to use all the control are steering wheel mounted and you cant tune the radio in unless stationary.

2nd Gear is notchy but thats an easy apparently.

Fuel consumption is nowwhere near stated....

Gearing is very tall, cant help but think the car would have been more fun with closer shorter gears....but would this have made economy worse. 1st will do nearly 40, 2nd nearly 70 and 3rd will indicate just about a ton. 4th and 5th dont really do much apart from allow cruising. My old cinqcento sporting from a decade ago had 12bhp less and was noticeably faster and more fun to drive as its gearing was alot shorter.

Overall the car is good, parkign is easy and running costs are great. For some silly reason the car does make me smile and the steering wheel feels nice. But it is bloody gutless....oh and dont expect to get 4 adults in if your anything over 5ft tall as a driver...3 is no probs though.

Curious, what sort of mpg are you getting?
