Subaru Impreza/Forrester/Legacy. That or an Audi if you can find a good one. Or a Honda HRV i.e. small soft roader?

Why do you want a 4wd for 600 miles per week of "mainly motorway" as you certainly don't need one for that?!

^this. More info needed to say if 4wd is necessary, otherwise dragging it up and down motorways is wrong for you, and the 4wd!

Why can't you just make suggestions? If the chap wants a mid size AWD estate let him have one!

Also after looking into the options I would definetly go with Subaru either the legacy - legacy out back or the Forester all 3 have greatreviews.

rolleyes
Foresters a good cars I've driven a bogo 2ltr and they're perfectly acepptable, but each to their own.
I know a few Legacy owners of both new and older shapes ,they adore them. !

Or those that have as well.

I used 06 Outback as a company pool car, then a 09 Forester. The 06 Outback was traded on the Forester with 150 on the clock.

Dad has a 04 Outback with 130 on the clock

Mum has a 97 Legacy with 260 on the clock she takes the dog out in.

I learnt to drive on a 92 Sportswagon and used the 97 Legacy a fair bit.

Apart from the Sportswagon, which was tough as nails but slow, all have been very reliable, good solid cars.

I ve got an Subaru Impreza Sport Wagon. I would recommend it and if you dont have to have WRX or STI written on it you can get good Imprezas cheaply. Its a bit thirsty for motorway work (I use it on a motorway 20 miles every day before diving down country lanes), but has been dependable and good in slidy stuff. I've put 75K on mine since I bought it (its now nearly 100k) and it costs me an average of £280 per year in servicing.

As good as the Legacy is, I would have thought an Audi would be a more pleasant place to spend that much time.

yes

I'm on Subaru wagon number 4, I keep trading up to better/faster ones. So far I've never found anything else that will cover the same range of talents as well as they do.

If it's a work hack for big motorway miles you are after, how about a diesel Octavia 4x4? Not a permanent 4wd, though its perfectly acceptable for the snow and driving across muddy fields when called for.

Thx Gents. Passat, Octavia and Subarus all appeal.

Reason for 4wd is that I live up in the hills of N Yorkshire where it would be helpful given the conditions experienced over the last 3 years. Mileage for work purposes would be to London or Leicester each week. Fr wd would be an option but defo not Rwd
