Folks, your advice on my dilema would be appreciated:

I had a test drive today of a Skoda Octavia vRS - white, hatchback, petrol, DSG gearbox, has full leather and bluetooth. It's approx. 8 months old but doesn't come with a couple of options that I would want i.e. rear parking sensors (which the dealer can retro-fit although they wouldn't have the same integration with the stereo display that the factory-fitted option would have) or the MDI option that allows connectivity with my iPod through the stereo. This can also be retro-fitted. Dealer is quoting £250 for the parking sensors but I haven't asked for a price for the MDI yet - the parts can be had on eBay for £170 though.

The Octavia is taxed until the end of May and was £300 for the first year, although I believe it's only £200 for the 2nd year.

The price-to-change, with my current car as a trade in, and including my plate transfer + the dealer-fit parking sensors, is around £10,780.

BUT

While I was at the dealer today I spotted a brand-new (although pre-registered on a 60-plate) Fabia vRS. Red, 1.4 Petrol, DSG box again, this one is the estate version. Definitely a smart wee thing, although I haven't driven it yet. It comes with the iPod interface and the parking sensors from the factory, but no bluetooth and no leather. Dealer says Bluetooth can't be retro-fitted to look 'factory' but said I should look into the Parrot option.

The Fabia is taxed until the end of Feb and I understand it'll be £125 to renew. Price to change inc. the plate transfer but not including anything regarding the bluetooth is around £6,530.

I loved the 'feel' of the Octavia, it felt very solid and had a real quality about it. I only do around 8.5K miles a year so no real reason to go for the diesel and the dealer is quoting 12-16 weeks for either Fabia or Octavia from the factory, but I could have either this red pre-registered Fabia or the white 8-month old Octavia in 2 weeks (while the plate trasnfer goes through).

I don't really need an estate though, although I think the estate version of the Fabia is more appealing to the eye than the hatch version.

Advice appreciated!

Close your eyes and imagine either on your drive.
Which one gives you the fuzziest feelings?

If it's got the spec you want, ticks all your needs boxes, and a test drive proves reassuring, I'd be tempted to go for the car that is "cheaper" - the Fabia Estate. That said, there's more money to lose in a newer car.

Only you can decide, ultimately.
