My wifes Alfa will be hit by the new road tax rate of £435 as it's next renewal date is the 1st of April when it comes into force.
Is there anything stopping us from buying early at the existing £220 rate and losing a months tax?
Still can't understand that cars older than 2001 which will be more polluting will pay a lot less!

What year is it? Are you sure it'll be that big a jump? Check via Parkers if not...

But no, there's nothing stopping you changing when you purchase a tax disc.

Hang on, are they really doing that higher-band retrospective taxation on cars registered from 2001 onwards? I thought the idea was scrapped.

I thought it was for post 06 cars only..... although would not surprise me if they've extended it to all post 01 vehicles. I think originally the plan was to punish all cars with CO2 ratings but they backed it to only post 06 cars due to the 'economic struggles' the country was going through at the time.

VED road tax rates planned for 2011 are as follows:

VED Rates in 2010-11
Band A (up to 100g/km CO2) no fee
Band B (101-110g/km CO2) £20
Band C (111-120g/km CO2) £30
Band D (121-130g/km CO2) £90
Band E (131-140g/km CO2) £110
Band F (141- 150g/km CO2)£125
Band G (151 to 165g/km CO2) £155
Band H (166 to 175g/km CO2) £180
Band I (176 to 185g/km CO2) £200
Band J (186 to 200g/km CO2) £235
Band K (201 to 225g/km CO2) £245
Band L (226 to 255g/km CO2) £425
Band M (Over 255g/km CO2) £435

Below is the VED rates for new cars bought in 2010-11, the so-called 'showroom tax'. These are the rates you will pay in the first year of ownership.

In the second year VED road tax rates will revert to the regular rate for that vehicle.

First-year VED rates in 2010-11
Band A (up to 100g/km CO2) no fee
Band B (101-110g/km CO2) no fee
Band C (111-120g/km CO2) no fee
Band D (121-130g/km CO2) no fee
Band E (131-140g/km CO2) £110
Band F (141- 150g/km CO2) £125
Band G (151 to 165g/km CO2) £155
Band H (166 to 175g/km CO2) £250
Band I (176 to 185g/km CO2) £300
Band J (186 to 200g/km CO2) £425
Band K (201 to 225g/km CO2) £550
Band L (226 to 255g/km CO2) £750
Band M (Over 255g/km CO2) £950

Please note these charges apply to cars registered after March 1, 2001. Vehicles registered before this date are taxed according to their engine size. From April 2009 cars with engines under 1549cc will pay £125 a year, and cars with engines over 1549cc will pay £190 a year.

Wow, I had no idea they were introducing this. Yet another penalty for the motorist.

Your car is only "less polluting" if you do less miles so my Mustang is cleaner than most cars on the road because it does significantly less miles.

So there's no longer an exemption for pre 2006 cars over 225g/km? They're now in their appropriate group?

I'm fairly sure you can buy a new tax disc whenever you want. I'd certainly be buying a full year at £235 (or whatever it is) rather than paying double the next month.

  • Band K includes cars that have a CO2 figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006.
Copied from direct.gov. Nothing has changed, panic over.

Only if you bought a new one tomorrow! That's the 2nd year rate, applicable only if you paid the showroom tax.

Nothing is changing. Google for "vehicle tax" and look on direct.gov, it's fairly straightforward.

No, your ST will stay as it is. The bottom graph is for new cars, I think.

The bottom table is for new cars and only for the first year. The 2nd year and beyond are as per the first table.

Nope, mine's £205 as well although my daughter's 1500 is still £125

Same here. I thought it was only 2006 onwards.
