Simple question - can this happen?

I appreciate that dealers aren't going to give you much in the way of a good deal if you want to p/x with money your way, as they'll still want to profit from the deal.

But if someone wanted to say... swap their Focus for an MX5 / mk3 MR2 or similar, would they entertain the idea without extracting the urine on car values?

My thinking is, a Focus would be a more resellable car than a 2 seater roadster, so they might be open to the idea!

TIA for any replies smile

Unlikely and if they do the car you are trading will have to be worth a lot more than the one the dealer is selling.

I've been offered a swap before, but it wasnt a brilliant deal.

They'll be wanting to make money on the car they sell you, and then wanting to make money on the car they get (whether they buy, PX or swap) from you. So you're being stung twice by the same dealer and your car will need to be worth plenty more than the one you take off their hands.

This will of course depend entirely on the dealership. Some won't bother trying to resell a PX themselves.

Of course they will. Put it simply.....

Dealer is selling car A @ £9000. He bought it at auction for £7000.

You have car B worth £9000 trade in value. He will sell it for £11,000.

You swap. He sells car B for £11,000 and makes £4000 revenue because you car has essentially only cost him the auction price of car A.

There are many permetations to this but from an independant car dealer there shouldnt be an issue so long as the trade in value of the focus is the same value as the sticker price of the mx5.

I swapped my 2002 Audi S3 for a 2000 S4 Avant. Both were immaculate, with similar mileage, and no additional cash changed hands.

i wouldnt play the desirability card too much - just like you are looking for an mx5 because its coming near spring, the dealer, who has probably had the mx5 all winter, knows in about six weeks time the interest in it will rise significantly. Also, dealers tend not to mind having one two seater / sports car about.

Hmm sounds like it depends very much on the dealer. Best thing to do is ask I suppose. Worst that can happen is they say no.

Well I was asking mostly out of curiosity, but a little in the way of practical advice in case the focus struggles to shift. I would expect to get a much better deal with cash, so that's "plan A'.

BMW dealer was happy to take my 335i and for me to take a Z4 with cash my way. We couldn't agree on the cash value my way though. Despite the fact they could retail it as an AUC, the valuation was dire, less than Webuyanycar in fact, which is where its going tomorrow.
