I'm going to be a Dad before the end of the year so my wife and I have a need for a new car to replace the Mini she loves smile

We've agreed on a 4x4. Fuel type is irrelevant as its mainly used for short journeys. Only things that are a must are

Leather interior
Satnav
ISOFIX mounting points.

The rest of it is whatever can be found. So far, the only thing that has taken my eye is the 4.8is X5. Just looking for alternatives if anyone can think of any.

Cheers

Matt

Lots of Cayennes in that price range - including Turbos

You'd get a lovely Legacy for that. All the advantages of an SUV without making you look like an idiot. smile

Discovery 3 HSE, by far the most complete family car I have bought, went through the usual fast estates 535d, rs6 but nothing can beat the D3, just wish I had found that out before losing ££££ in depreciation on the others, but I guess you live and learn.
It's totally unstoppable, comfortable to cruise to the house in s.France, plus can take all the bad weather and snow you can throw at it...

Hardly going to stand up to a 4.8 BMW but the Volvo XC90 seems to collect good reviews whenever it's tested. Can be had with the D5 engine, which I'm led to believe is the pick of the bunch or the 4.4 V8 if that's the sort of puch you're looking for. Plus, even as 4x4's go the safety of the Volvo earns a very good rep for a reason.

Plenty of Porsche Cayennes in that price bracket either with the 3.2 or the 4.5 and you're buying into a decent level of comfort, and some actual off road ability if you fancy taking the sprog greenlaning anytime soon.

Although falling foul of a 'mum on school run' stereotype the Range Rover Vogue comes with a hefty V8 and TBH felt a bit like driving a lounge on the road. I guess women like em for a reason!

Now if you've got the dosh and a 4x4 is what you want, get one, but there are plenty of cars out there that can meet your spec for a much lower price, but I'm sure others can recommend them in posts to come.

To be honest, I'm fed up arguing with her about cars. She's openly admitted the last two cars she bought after ignoring what I told her turned out to be bad buys. I would prefer the M5 touring personally as it goes like hell, but is also immensely practical, but she wants a 4x4 so I just give in.

Never considered the Cayenne or the XC90, so will have a look.

Had a legacy before and loved it, but that would open a whole can of worms with the bint, and I can't be bothered with the grief.

Because you are an idiot if you drive an "SUV" (whatever that means - are from the US of A?)?

Ironic given your username! How about the Discovery? They're a touch narrower IIRC.

Not as wide as the Range Rovers.

Petrol or Diesel.

Far more reliable than any of the Green oval stuff.

When I first came to this forum, all the new dads where looking chop in their tuscans for Cerberas.... How times change

I can remember when it was all fields round here too;)

Back to the quest, Why not look for something a bit smaller, such as Rav4, Kuga, santa fe FL2 etc. You could probably get a younger one for the budget,
