Engine management light on 2006 Brera,2.2JTS.Booked into Western Alfa,Glasgow yesterday for the 2nd time to diagnose fault.Warning light stays on for max 3 days and then disappears and comes back on about 1 week later and off after 1 day and the same process again and again.Error code indicating slight wear on timing chain or slight misalignment.Western have said that a new chain and tensioners is required £670.00 inc fitting but I have read that this system has the advantage of not needing replaced during the lifespan of the engine. The car has only covered 29000 miles.
Has anyone else come across this problem or can give further advise.I am not convinced by Western's recommendations.

Great story. Shame you missed all the important information, like which engine you're talking about?

Seek a second opinion. Most dealer 'mechanics' are simply fitters rather than repairers - if something shows a fault code simply swap it out is the answer to every problem for them.

This isn't a criticism, just a fact. It makes sense for them but it isn't the most cost effective solution for the customer.

It's an Alfa.

I highly doubt the chain has any wear at 29k. My first port of call would be to change the sensor that is telling you the chain is fked.

If the chain is fked, I would be back to Alfa asking why a lifetime chain is knackered after 29k.

I had the same problem on mine - although my warning light was on permanently. From what I could find out from the dealer the chains stretch slightly that causes the sensor report a fault. Luckily mine was still under warranty at the time (had only done 19k miles) so was replaced at no cost to me.
From what I read, both on here in the Alfa forum and on places like AlfaOwner it is a common problem. And from the time it took the dealer to get the parts for mine (last October time), it seems that there is a high demand for replacements.
If you have any documentation from when you bought the car to show it is a lifetime part, pretty sure I read somewhere that they changed their stance on that a couple of years ago, then perhaps use that see if you can get a contribution from Alfa UK? Very slim chance, but might be worth a try?

Bad design . . . by GM!
